House passes election reform bill to curb future interference; 9 Republicans join Democrats.
ABC News (Moderate Left) • Factual Grade 78% • 3 min read

The Presidential Election Reform Act, crafted largely by Rep. Zoe Lofgren [D] and Rep. Liz Cheney [R], passed 229-203. The legislation would alter the 135-year-old Electoral Count Act, which former President Trump and his allies focused on in their efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 race.
    ...
The bill would confirm that the vice president's role in overseeing the Electoral College count after each election is purely ministerial. Trump and his allies pressed then-Vice President Mike Pence to not green-light the electors submitted from certain swing states and pushed governors to send to Congress alternate slates of electors who backed Trump.
    ...
[The bill] would raise the threshold needed for electoral objections by lawmakers to receive a vote in Congress and it would mandate that governors transmit state results to Congress. Objections to some states' electors on Jan. 6, 2021 easily earned votes under the current standards, which only require one member each in [chamber] to back an objection. The new legislation raises that floor to one-third of each chamber.

Nine Republicans join all House Democrats to pass the Presidential Election Reform Act.

Will the West’s military support of Ukraine lead to a nuclear war?

387 votes, 45 comments

Context: Russia begins to mobilize reserve forces; Putin threatens willingness to use nuclear weapons.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Unlikely - To be clear, nuclear holocaust is always a misunderstanding away. War involving great nuclear powers is a ripe and fertile field to grow such misunderstandings. But the intentional use of nuclear weapons in the former Soviet breadbasket is the last thing Putin wants. He needs this territory intact economically while removing western influence politically/militarily. The West's support has just protracted the killing. Russia was never going to back down.

Maybe - The mainstream understanding of Putin is that he's a barbaric madman who greatly underestimated the cost of the war and/or is completely ready to throw thousands into the meat grinder, but also that he has enough self-preservation to av...

Probably - If Putin is serious, he's going to hold a "vote" that is all but guaranteed to result in the annexation of the Ukrainian t...
