Los Angeles city council president resigns from post over racist comments.
The Guardian (Moderate Left) • Factual Grade 75% • 5 min read

Nury Martinez apologized for the October 2021 remarks during a meeting over redistricting with fellow council members Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo and labor leader Ron Herrera, and stepped down as city council president on Monday. She did not say she would resign her council seat. All the politicians involved are Democrats.
    ...
In the leaked audio, the Latino leaders can be heard denigrating various groups of constituents as they try to determine how to use the redistricting process to secure more political power for Latinos. The clips captured [Martinez] calling a colleague’s Black son “a little monkey.” Of the LA district attorney, Martinez said: “F*ck that guy – he’s with the Blacks.” De León and Herrera can also be heard speaking dismissively of Black voters.
    ...
Latinos make up about half the Los Angeles population of about 4 million. Martinez was elected to the council in 2013 and became its first Latina president in 2020. As of 2018, her district had a primarily Latino population that outnumbered Black voters.

Should the task of hosting undocumented migrants be shared among US cities?

573 votes, 90 comments

Context: NYC declares state of emergency amid influx of undocumented immigrants sent from border states.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - If the Federal Government is not going to come up with and enforce a modern immigration system that eliminates the idea of widespread "undocumented" immigration, then absolutely it makes sense to spread the burden of caring for these American hopefuls. Ideally there would be a system, though, that has a clear highway of step 1 to step whatever, bringing these individuals to the employers who need them in a civilized way. America needs the hands, though you'd not know it with how the media goes on and on. Right now these immigrants are a burden. But with the right system, immigration could be a huge opportunity for them and for our country.

No - Undocumented immigrants should be the problem of border patrol and they should have more funding to put people in hotels nearby ...
