In the case of Alex and Judy Williams, who built and sold The New Stack, a content company that serves developers, the idea stemmed from Alex's career as a tech journalist. When they launched in 2014, Judy juggled her full-time job as a nurse while serving as The New Stack's copyeditor, accountant and operations chief.
The couple sold the business in 2021 to a firm called Insight Partners that typically invests in software companies, and both Alex and Judy stayed on to continue running the publication.
