Two killed, seven injured in shooting at St. Louis high school; suspect killed by police, authorities say.

The gunman, a 19-year-old, fatally shot a 61-year-old woman and 16-year-old girl at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School, St. Louis Police Department Commissioner Mike Sack said. The gunman graduated from the school last year and has no prior criminal history, Sack said. He had almost a dozen 30-round, high-capacity magazines on him, Sack said.
    ...
Eight people, including the gunman, were taken to the hospital, Sack said. The suspect died at the hospital, he added. The seven injured were stable. Officers were trying to determine a motive, Sack said. "There is some suspicion that there may be some mental illness," Sack said.
    ...
Officers arrived four minutes [after receiving the active shooter call] and "immediately" entered the school. According to police, officers shot the gunman less than 15 minutes after the call came in. Asked how the gunman gained entry, Sack provided few details. The school has metal detectors, and the doors were locked, he said. Seven security guards were in the school at the time, he said, but not all are armed.

Should prison labor be voluntary?

416 votes, 49 comments

Context: Several states have ballot measures that would amend state constitutional provisions allowing for slavery in prison.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - We have come so far and it seems as the generations pass we forget why things are the way they are. Labor in prison is part a payback program. Thus "paying their debt to society" is a thing. When a person commits a crime, there is real loss suffered by the community at large. A loss of their sense of security at the minimum, and loss of real property at worst. That is not paid back by simply locking the perpetrator in a cell for a period of time...that is simple punishment. And a punishment that we the victims pay to have administered. No, incarceration alone pays back little to nothing to society...in fact it creates burden. A criminal's work pays for his daily essentials and helps absolve him/her of their debt.

Yes - They're not slaves or indentured servants. Prison should be about rehabilitation...

Unsure - As someone who has been to prison. Forced labor in prison is exploited, more commonly than one may think. Prison maintenance is understandable, but more often than not whatever work cr...
