Last year, Automattic (the maker of WordPress) acquired the podcast player, Pocket Casts.

And this week they announced they will turn the app into an open-source podcasting client. Opening a world of possibilities for makers and creators.

News like these is just confirmation that podcasting is a non-stop growing industry and every day more opportunities appear.

Here are some numbers to show you the big picture:

Its market size value in 2021 was $14.25 billion.

It’s expected to reach $94.88 billion in 2028.

There are over 2 million active podcasts worldwide.

424 million people in the world listen to podcasts. That is 1 of every 5 Internet users.

Spotify invested $1 billion in original podcast content.

Apple made over $12 billion in AirPods revenue last year. They were obviously key to spreading audio consumption in all formats (some people even want to keep listening to podcasts in the shower).

Why does this matter?

Because this is an established industry (no risky bets) with a massive market cap that is going to hit almost $100 billion in a couple of years.
