Fed announces sixth consecutive hike in US interest rates to fight inflation.
The Guardian (Moderate Left) • Factual Grade 80% • 3 min read

The Fed’s latest increase [three-quarters of a percentage point] brings the federal funds rate – which acts as a benchmark for everything including business loans, credit card and mortgage rates – to between 3.75% and 4%. US stock markets rose as the Fed indicated that the pace of rate rises could start to taper but sank as [Fed chair Jerome Powell] made clear that rates could stay high for longer than the Fed had first indicated.
    ...
Powell acknowledged that officials were considering the pace of rate rises as they assess their impact on the wider economy. But he warned it was “very premature to think about pausing." The central bank does not expect inflation or interest rates to reach the levels seen in the 80s.
    ...
Powell said the chances of the US economy achieving a “soft landing” and avoiding recession as it fights off inflation had “narrowed”. “We’ve always said it was going to be difficult. I think to the extent rates have to go higher and stay higher for longer, it becomes harder to see the path,” he said.

Should US military personnel be sent to Ukraine to inspect military aid?

321 votes, 35 comments

Context: US confirms military personnel are in Ukraine to ensure arms are properly delivered, not trafficked.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - We're spending billions of dollars sending advanced equipment to Ukraine, and in the past (e.g. Syria) such equipment has ended up in the hands of terrorists and other malefactors. Having personnel in Ukraine does heighten the risk of escalation with Russia, but I think dumping advanced munitions into Ukraine without a robust system in place to ensure they aren't misappropriated is an even greater risk to national security.

No - The scale of our military aid to Ukraine is basically unprecedented and we have a long history of our arms ending up in the wrong hands, so I'm glad that the US is trying to track the ...

Unsure - Any and all aid that the United States sends abroad should be monitored. I'm no...
