In his opening remarks, Democratic PA Senate nominee John Fetterman tried to temper expectations and confront the “elephant in the room”: that due to his ongoing recovery from a recent stroke, he would struggle with his words in a live, rapid-fire format. Fetterman’s struggles meant he often stopped short of providing in-depth answers on different questions.

Mehmet Oz’s position on abortion has been murky. When asked about [Sen. Lindsey Graham's proposed 15-week abortion ban], Oz again dodged the question. Oz mostly avoided going after Fetterman’s health, instead attacking him on the economy and crime. Oz cited Fetterman's support for pardons and commutations as the chair of the state’s Pardon Board.

Fetterman, when asked, said he supported fracking, though he had said he opposed it in a 2018 interview. Since then, he has said that he backs the practice, which has supported thousands of jobs in the oil and gas industry in the state. When asked about the inconsistency, Fetterman stressed his backing for the practice but did not address the change in position.

Context: Penn State allows event featuring Proud Boys founder, cancels it amid worries of violence between event protestors and supporters.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - College campuses have long been the grounds where unencumbered exchange of ideas happen. One learns to listen, form responses, and express their viewpoints in a non-threatening environment. We should be very worried if we do not allow this expression- as long as it does not cause physical harm. I support Penn State’s allowance of this group to speak and if I were a student there I would have relished the opportunity to attend and speak about the overwhelming harm this and other like groups are bringing to this country.
