In the spirit of all the creativity I saw on Halloween last week (including this, um, worm?!), this issue is loosely themed around the topic of getting crafty. There’s nothing better for giving your brain the massage it needs than to put the screens away, pull out some pen, paper, and some scissors, and make something new. Just for fun.

We’ll be back next week with a special guest edit from food writer Ruby Tandoh. Have a great weekend!  —Alisha

P.S. ICYMI: Jump into sweater weather mode by reading up on our fall books issue and our fall cookbooks issue.

PUMPKIN. SPICE. DONUT CAKE! Image from Yossy Arefi.

This Week's Picks

  • Watch + read: Not related to crafts, but we’re so excited to watch Fleishman Is In Trouble after watching this trailer (it’s out on 11/17 on Hulu). Have you read the novel by Taffy Brodesser-Akner yet?
  • Baking projects: Pumpkin. Spice. Donut cakes. + Apple rose tartes tatin that are a craft in and of themselves.
  • The secret to glowy, glass skin isn’t foundation alone. A pump of the TikTok viral Polyglutamic Acid Serum from The Inkey List mixed into your makeup instantly increases your glow. Take 20% off sitewide with code GNI20. *Sponsor
  • Plants you can’t kill: We’re really into these realistic houseplants you can make from paper. Weekend project, anyone?
  • And in that same vein: These kits for making beautiful (and hyper-realistic looking) flowers like Irises or Ranunculus would make a great gift.
  • For crafting inspo: Lately we’ve loved following Jodi Levine, a super crafter who’s written some books on crafting, including one on how to repurpose toilet tubes. (Check out these these “moldy cookies” she made…from sugar!)
  • LMNT is a delicious electrolyte drink mix that doubles as a cocktail mixer and hangover cure— basically what holiday season dreams are made of. It comes in flavors like citrus salt and mango chili, plus, it’s sugar- and gluten-free. Get a free sample pack with purchase. *Sponsor
  • For just zoning out while watching The White Lotus S2: A pretty punch needle starter kit.
  • For the apres ski: A festive paint by numbers kit.
  • For family-friend crafting: We’ve got Erica Domesek’s new book, P.S. - We Made This, in our carts.
  • An adult coloring book we can get behind: Featuring pretty scenes in London.
  • Okay, not technically a craft but another kind of craftsmanship: Don’t throw out your dog-destroyed heels because wow!
  • Love this vibe for us all this weekend.
  • Finally: The coolest thing you’ll ever click on today. Promise. :)

Crowd-pleasing books to gift for some serious self-care time this season

Whether they’re prone to unwinding on the couch, in the kitchen, or over a glass of wine, these Avery and TarcherPerigee titles are a thoughtful way to gift a bit of self-care time to one of your favorite people…

Burn After Writing, Sharon Jones’ bestseller and TikTok sensation, is a journal with incisive questions and thought experiments, which aims to help readers learn new things while letting others go. And when they’re done? Toss it, hide it, or Burn After Writing—no need to share it on social or anywhere else.

Joanne Lee Molinaro has already captivated millions on social media with her personal tales of love, family, and food, but her debut cookbook, The Korean Vegan Cookbook, shares even more poignant snapshots of her family history, as well as traditional and reimagined Korean dishes. With recipes like Jjajangmyun—the rich Korean-Chinese black bean noodles she ate on birthdays—and Chocolate Sweet Potato Cake—an ode to the two foods that saved her mother’s life after she fled North Korea—there’s something for everyone to love—Korean, vegan, or neither.

Wine can be intimidating, but Wine Folly: Magnum Edition is not. The expanded hardcover version of the go-to guide for wine features tons of easy-to-digest info to nerd out on, be it a wine region explorer complete with detailed maps or an expanded food and wine pairing section. It’s the perfect gift for someone who’s looking to up their wine knowledge and really impress their friends on the next night out (or in).
