​Hi Bloomer! Thank you for your questions...it's something I imagine a lot of people can relate to.
​
I'd like to start by asking what is your definition of a "contributing, valuable member of society?" It sounds like your current definition may be a bit dangerous...because purpose isn't what we do. We are ALL valuable and have inherent worth. There is nothing that we need to do to be valuable. And yes, any implication that we must do to be valuable is driven by capitalism. In 1930, the economist Keynes predicted that his grandchildren would have a 5 day weekend due to the increase in productivity. Instead, we are working more than ever and have forgotten that the goal was more leisure!

So if purpose isn't what we do, what is it? It's the reason we get out of bed in the morning. It's the mystery in each moment. The unfolding of life as it is. The continuous growth of our soul. And it is constantly changing. I recently heard someone say that spirits are jealous of humans because of their ability to create in the world. Being in a human body gives us the ability to create. Create what? Anything! It could be a loaf of bread, a painting, a community event, a social impact project...anything!

Your question is a powerful one: Is purpose a real part of self-discovery or plainly a capitalism-inspired notion to make us always aim higher and produce more? I'd offer that you already have the answer, which should give you plenty of confidence to continue being a valuable member of society. Your purpose today might be different than your purpose tomorrow. As long as your continuing to listen to your soul and are authentic in your being, you're following your purpose.
