4 Lies Our Consumer Society Is Telling You That are Worth Rejecting Right Now

Editor's note: This is a guest post by Jessalynn Jones of Doable Simplicity.

Black Friday has always reminded me of a Las Vegas buffet. Showy, with a stage set for overconsumption.

You enter the glitzy food line and want to get your money's worth, so you begin eating… and eating.

At first it makes sense to pile on more. It all looks too good to pass up. But then a bellyache—with symptoms similar to buyer's remorse—sets in. You leave uncomfortable, dealing with regret, and questioning your consumption.

Truth is, we live in a consumer society. And no day is that more obvious than Black Friday. A day where sales tricks and discounts of 20% or more bring crowds of people looking to save money. The average American spent $430 dollars on Black Friday in 2021. And 42% of those shoppers regretted their Black Friday purchases.

What is a consumer society?

In America, and many other nations, the economy is driven by consumerism.

Now, a consumer society rests on the idea that people will always need to consume things, which is partially true. We all need to consume food, clothing, gas for our cars, houses, blankets, and the list goes on and on.

The problem is a consumer society is built on the idea that you will never even pause in your consumption… you will keep consuming like you are in a hot dog eating contest for the rest of your life! And they don't care how many times you throw up, as long as you keep eating those hot dogs!

As Black Friday approaches, it's worth heightening our awareness of the consumer society we live in and the tricks it touts.

Here are 4 lies our consumer society is telling you that are worth rejecting right now:
