Just about everyone around the country, it seems, has been getting sick with non-Covid viral illnesses. Respiratory infections are spiking and that's placing a huge strain on hospitals. This is in direct contrast to the past few years when folks often couldn't even recall when they the last time they got stuck with a cold was.

So why is everyone getting sick all at once and did the pandemic's persistent lockdowns have anything to do with it? Our health reporter Miriam Fauzia took a deep dive into this question and her reporting reveals not only how lockdowns may have influenced how effective our immune systems are but also how to ensure that your disease-fighting cells are in tip-top shape this winter.

Why is everyone getting sick right now?

If it feels like everyone around you is getting sick, you aren’t wrong. The number of respiratory viruses currently making the rounds is strikingly high, and it's putting a strain on hospital staff, pharmacies, and even drug suppliers.

But just two years ago, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, many people were still living in lockdown, remarking on the fact that they couldn’t remember the last time they were sick. As many of us transition back to normal life, we may find ourselves vulnerable to potential infections or microbes that wouldn’t ordinarily get us down. Doesn’t this mean that our immune systems actually weakened during lockdown?

Inverse spoke to two psychoneuroimmunologists, Anna Marsland of the University of Pittsburgh and Steve Cole of the University of California, Los Angeles, to learn more about the effects lockdown may have had on our immune systems.

Artemis I is on its way home from the Moon

The Artemis I mission is coming back to planet Earth, NASA officials confirmed on Monday, December 5.

The space agency announced the news as its Orion capsule emerged from the dark side of the Moon. In this case, “dark” means loss of signal. During the special maneuver to come home, Orion flew behind the Moon, which blocked its signals from reaching the communications antenna infrastructure on Earth known as the Deep Space Network.

If Orion successfully splashes down to Earth in six days, the capsule will get NASA one step closer to bringing astronauts to the Moon to see what Orion sees for themselves. The livestream showed a faraway crescent Earth and cratered pockets on the Moon’s surface along the edge of lunar daylight and nighttime.

I’m going to level with you all: storage is not a sexy tech topic.

It’s time to wake up, console gamers; it’s time to open your eyes to the glory of high-speed storage; it’s time to behold... the Seagate expansion card.

Wednesday needs to ditch Tim Burton in Season 2

Wednesday is causing quite the uproar, as Netflix claims a record-breaking number of customers tuned into the series over Thanksgiving weekend.

The Addams Family project was billed as a new leaf for the franchise, and it brought a big name with it: Tim Burton. But was it really? Maybe Wednesday’s involvement with Tim Burton was contorting the series into something it wasn’t meant to be.

Crisis Core Reunion is the best Final Fantasy game you've never played

Originally released on the PSP in 2007, Crisis Core is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII set seven years earlier. The story follows SOLDIER 2nd-class Zack Fair as he learns more about the workings of the Shinra Corporation — and the hideous experiments that lead to the events of FF7.

Crisis Core Reunion doesn’t alter the story of the original PSP game, but it lands somewhere between a remaster and a remake on account of its gorgeous graphical updates and gameplay improvements.

Still, the overwhelming positives of experiencing the Crisis Core story on modern consoles make its minor flaws totally forgivable.
