5 Things I'm Doing to Make the Most out of 2023 in My Business

It's resolution time! At least the great New Year's content deluge that's flooding the internet right now suggests that.

The change of the years is a great time (pun! :D) to look back, evaluate, and reflect, and course-correct where necessary. I like this time of the year for that.

I don't do New Year's resolutions anymore, because they've turned out to not work for me. Instead, I set intentions, define key qualities for the year ahead, and do my best to give myself a fresh start on 1/1/23, because I do really like how fresh a new year can feel.

Below, I'm sharing five things I'm doing at the end of the year to prepare myself for a good year close 2022 out right as inspiration for you.

set myself up for joy and success in 2023.

1. Close out all old tasks

Somebody told me a really good metaphor for unfinished tasks this week. They're like holding a glass of water. If you hold it for a moment, no problem. If you try holding it for a day, your arm won't be able to do it.

Old stuff zaps my energy. I like when it's all settled and done and am finishing all the menial little things I've been putting off for too long.

2. Rest and see friends and family to up my joy-levels

Duh. This time of the year is great to catch up with people. Nobody's really-really busy and schedules are very flexible.

I love this time of the year for that, because rest and seeing friends and fam makes the world a lot more fuzzy and warm for a recharged start into the new year.

3. Decide what to let go and leave behind in 2022

Similar to closing out old tasks, I do an inner inventory on the last day of the year. Clutter isn't just digital or physical, it can also live in our minds.

On 12/31, I like to ask myself:

Looking back: What was great, what am I grateful for, what did I learn, where did I stumble, what was holding me back, what do I want to let go off?

Looking forward: Where do I want to go with life? What do I want to experience and create? How do I want to feel throughout the year?

4. Define key qualities I want to embody in my life

I believe this is better than resolutions. In the past, resolutions were more short-term for me, as in "fix this external thing, so I'll feel better about everything". That didn't work.

Instead, after looking back on the year and looking forward to 2023, I define key qualities as the motto for the year.

As an example: One of those key qualities for me is courage. 2022 wasn't a year where I was super courageous in my life and I'd like to change that to go farther with everything I want to do and experience. I'll use courage as a lens for my daily actions and the bigger picture to evaluate if I'm shrinking myself or leaning into the bolder path.

That will get me much farther than just telling myself I need to get on 3 big podcasts or something like that, because it's an inner change and a different commitment than just slapping on a new coat of paint.

5. Set a business goal for 2023 that will actually motivate me

The new year is a great time to set goals for business. For some, money in business is a great motivator. I like money - and I need an emotional component in what I do, as well. Awareness around your motivations is a game-changer, because we're all wired in different ways.

As an example: Something like "I'll make 6/7/8 figures in 2023" isn't enough for me. A better way to approach this from my perspective could be "I'll experience financial freedom by serving more than 100 people in my business". I'll think about this more concretely during my year in review session on the 31st.

If you like resolutions, set them. If you don't, don't. Feel free to ignore all the advice and content that's being shared online right now, if it doesn't resonate.

There are many ways to start a new year.
