The GIST - They’re the problem, it’s them
From The Gist Team
Happy Friday!
Itâs truly a happy one because Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin continues to show signs of improvement after suffering a cardiac arrest on Monday Night Football. Hamlin is awake, responsive and even asked doctors via writing who won the since-suspended game.
- Pass the tissues, then keep scrolling for more on this story, plus the other happenings in the NFL and beyond.

If we have learned anything about Damar the last few days, itâs that he puts others before himself. Now he will see the overflow of support he has gotten and get to change more lives because of it.

đ NFL: The show must go on
The GIST: While the league continues to process Mondayâs terrifying events, squads are preparing for this weekendâs regular season finale slate, which will feature eight teams vying for the three remaining playoff spots.
- One squad thatâs definitely raring to go? The Bills. When asked if he feels theyâre ready to play football, Buffalo quarterback (QB) Josh Allen said, âI doâŚThatâs what [Damar] wants, thatâs what his dad wants.â Onward.
The setup: Quick refresher: Fourteen (seven from the AFC, seven from the NFC) of the leagueâs 32 teams make the playoffs. Although eleven have already clinched a spot, theyâll still be competing this weekend for all-important seeding. The No. 1 seed in each conference earns a first-round bye, and higher seeds nab crucial home-field advantage.
Where it gets complicated: Thereâs an obvious elephant in the room: the unfinished Bills vs. Cincinnati Bengals game, which had major playoff implications. The NFL officially canceled it last night, but is still considering various scenarios for how to handle the seeding impact, with owners set to meet today to discuss.
- Also complicated? Those aforementioned seeding possibilities. Channel your inner Charlie Day and untangle the web here before we detail the teams still trying to punch their postseason tickets.
AFC: Five squads are in the hunt for the two remaining AFC berths. Up first, the suddenly surging Jacksonville Jaguars face the no-longer-so-mighty Tennessee Titans tomorrow at 8:15 p.m. ET. Winner nabs the AFC South crown and with it a postseason berth. The Jags still have a chance to advance with a loss, but the Titans will be eliminated with an L.
- Elsewhere, the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers all have a shot, but the Pats have the easiest route. Head coach Bill Belichickâs squad clinches with a win against the Bills on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Simple as that.
NFC: The league is truly saving the best for last in the NFC, where three squads are playing musical chairs for the lone spot up for grabs. It all rides on the 8:20 p.m. ET Sunday Night Football showdown between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.
- If the Packers win, theyâre in. If the Lions win and the Seattle Seahawks lose to the LA Rams on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET, Detroit is through. And just because things werenât messy enough, if Seattle wins and the Packers lose, the Seahawks grab the final berth.
- TL;DR? Itâs going to be an epic season finale weekend. Buckle up.
â˝ U.S. Soccer: No winners here
Content warning: This section contains mention of domestic violence.
The GIST: As detailed on yesterdayâs episode of The GIST of It, U.S. Soccer is investigating USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter and other members of the federationâs staff for allegations of âinappropriate behavior,â including a 1991 domestic violence incident involving Berhalter and his now wife, Rosalind.
- Accusations like these should always be taken seriously, but unfortunately, theyâre only half of the story.
The no-background: After the USMNT was eliminated from the World Cup in early December, Berhalter revealed that an unnamed player was nearly sent home from Qatar for failing to meet on- and off-field expectations.
- Berhalter was clearly referring to midfielder Gio Reyna who, despite expectations for a breakout tourney, made just two appearances off the bench. Reyna later confirmed it was him via Instagram.
The turning point: After the World Cup, Reynaâs mother, former USWNT player Danielle Reyna, called U.S. Soccerâs sporting director and said it was âespecially unfairâ that Gio was being criticized âwhen Gregg had asked for and received forgiveness for doing something so much worse at the same age.â
- Danielle was referencing a 1991 incident that has since been confirmed by Berhalter. He released a statement saying that when he was 18, he got in an argument with his then-girlfriend Rosalind and âkicked her in the legs.â They broke up and reconciled after Berhalter sought counseling, and his behavior has ânever been repeated.â
- Another layer to this complicated story? The Reyna and Berhalter families have been friends for decades. The men played youth and high school soccer together, and the women were teammates and roommates at UNC, where Berhalter also played in college.
- Yesterday, Berhalter said that his âheart aches for [his] wife because it was her story to tell if she chose to or not.â Truth.
Whatâs next: Danielleâs conversation rightfully set off an investigation into Berhalter, which is still ongoing after his contract expired on December 31st and has not been renewed. Needless to say, thereâll be more to come, but itâs devastating to see this private feud falling out in a very public way.
đ Buckle up for the Buckeye state
The GIST: On January 1st, FanDuel welcomed Ohio into its sports betting fold, making it the 18th state where FanDuel Sportsbook has been legalized. Making money moves.
- To celebrate, FanDuel is offering a massive promo where new users in Ohio can place a $5 bet and receive $200 in bonus bets, regardless of whether that bet wins or loses.
- Donât live in Ohio? Let a pal who does know, or take advantage of FanDuelâs other promos.
The growth: This comes after a record-setting year where more than $73 billion (!!!) was wagered using online sportsbooks between January and October. Thatâs a 98% increase from the same period in 2021 and a whopping 2,268% increase from 2019.
The link: Putting a little skin in the game also heightens fan engagement. Those who bet on an NFL game are more likely to report increased viewership. Bet on it, indeed.

đđ¤¸ââď¸ NCAA womenâs gymnastics: Vaulting into 2023
The GIST: Grab your favorite leo and try to balance your excitement, because college womenâs gymnastics returns today. Hereâs whoâs hoping to string perfect 10s together all the way to the natty.
How it works: About 3,500 (!!!) female gymnasts across 81 NCAA programs compete in four events (vault, bars, beam and floor) at meets throughout the season. The top 36 teams plus 76 individuals not on a qualifying team â 12 all-arounders and 16 specialists on each event â will be selected for the postseason.
The contenders: Leading the charge to the 2023 âship are defending champs No. 1 Oklahoma. Not only are the Sooners returning most of their 2022 title team, but theyâve also added two former-elite freshmen, elevating their already stacked squad.
- On their heels, however, is No. 2 Florida, whose deep recruiting and returning star Trinity Thomas could turn the Sooners into Gator bait.
- But donât count out No. 3 Utah or No. 4 Michigan. The Utes are perennially strong, particularly on beam and floor, while the 2021 champ Wolverines feature a slew of upperclassmen hungry for hardware.
The standouts: Many of Team USAâs brightest stars will be sticking landings all over collegiate mats. Olympians Jade Carey (Oregon State), Sunisa Lee (Auburn) and Jordan Chiles (UCLA) are medalists to watch, along with Floridaâs Leanne Wong.
- Florida also boasts the aforementioned reigning all-around national champ Thomas, the only NCAA gymnast with three gym slams (a perfect 10.0 on every event at a single meet). Look for her to make more viral routines look stunningly easy.
What to watch: The action begins today, with the biggest kickoff meet, the Super 16 Vegas Podium Challenge. The Sin City competition features 16 squads, 14 of which are preseason ranked. Catch Fisk, the first-ever HBCU team, and previously mentioned Carey in todayâs sessions one and two, respectively.
- Then tomorrow, donât miss 2022 Pac-12 champ Cal in session three or anyone in the stacked session four that includes No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 4. Michigan, No. 5 Auburn and No. 10 UCLA. Itâs floor party season.

The GIST's Picks |
đż Whoâs chasing history
American skier Mikaela Shiffrin. Sheâs one World Cup victory away from tying Lindsey Vonnâs all-time record after winning her 81st title in Wednesdayâs slalom competition in Croatia.
- Shiffrinâs big celly was postponed by unfavorable weather conditions, but she could break the record with two races from Slovenia this weekend. Snow way sheâs stopping now.
â˝ What to check out
The USWNT roster for the squadâs upcoming World Cup preview January friendlies vs. New Zealand. The highlight? Forward Lynn Williams will take the pitch for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury last February. LFG.
đ Whatâs looming
Todayâs deadline for the LA Dodgers to decide whether or not to release pitcher Trevor Bauer after he was stunningly reinstated early from a domestic violence suspension that was supposed to rightfully end his career. The world is watching.
đđ What to watch
A jam-packed weekend of ranked NCAA womenâs basketball matchups. How many ways can you split a screen?
