Move Over Harvey and Elle

Robot lawyers have arrived. For the first time ever in US history, a robot will advise a defendant in court.

Company DoNotPay has created an AI “robot” that runs on a smartphone located in the defendant’s pocket and, through an earpiece, advises them on what to say after listening to the arguments presented during the hearing.

The specifics of the “robot experiment” have been purposely kept under wraps with the court hearing approaching. However, here’s what you need to know.

  • The upcoming hearing isn’t a big case. It involves a speeding ticket.
  • The company is in violation of courtroom laws and protocol and it knows it. In many countries and jurisdictions around the world, phones and internet connected devices are banned from courts.
  • To get around these restrictions, founder and CEO Joshua Browder Browder explained that the company is relying on a hearing accessibility loophole that will allow the defendant to wear AirPods. 🎧
  • No one in court other than the defendant will know that an AI lawyer is even involved. Which explains all the hush hush around the technology.
  • DoNotPay says it’ll cover any fines or fees incurred by the defendant if its AI gets stage fright in court or if they lose the challenge.

About the Startup

DoNotPay was launched in 2015 as a basic chatbot for legal issues. In less than two years, it successfully contested 160,000 parking tickets in New York and London. And the company claims it has resolved 2 million cases total since its founding. 🚨

In a video posted to his Twitter account, Browder demonstrated knocking $10 off of a monthly internet bill using the ChatGPT-powered bot. He recently also used the AI to reverse $16 worth of bank fees.

What’s more?

On Sunday, CEO Browder also tweeted out a juicy (yet ethically risky) $1,000,000 proposition for lawyers or people with an upcoming case. Check out his tweet below.

The Powers That Pee

Healthcare is taking a weird turn. Startups are trying to jump on any goofy, wacky tech they can think off. This time, involves urination.

Urine can tell us important things about our health. With that token, Withings company has come up with a new technology called U-Scan - a sensor that attaches to your toilet bowl and analyses your urine every time you use it. 🚽

How it works?

  • The device works best if you attach it to the front of your toilet bowl (See image below).
  • Urine will flow to a small collection inlet, which the company says can differentiate between urine and external liquid, such as toilet water.
  • A thermal sensor detects the presence of urine, and it's moved to a test pod.
  • When the analysis is finished, waste is released from the device and disappears with a flush.
  • Results are routed to your phone and you can read your health insights daily on the Withings' Health Mate app.

The device has two features/settings depending on what kind of health metrics you want to track.

One setting measures ketone, vitamin C and urine's pH levels. This helps you monitor your nutrition, metabolic rate and kidney health.

The second setting is for people who want to better track their menstrual cycles, by measuring surges of LH, or luteinizing hormone. LH peaks when ovulation is right around the corner and fertility is likely highest.

What else?

The device is not approved by the FDA so it won’t be launched in the US just yet. But if you or your friends are taking a trip to Europe anytime soon then you can smuggle it down from there (kidding). 😉

Like any new invasive and analytical tech, this one too has sparked privacy concerns. Questions people have - some legit, some weird

  • How do we know our results are accurate?
  • Will I get baby diaper and food ads if the device knew I was pregnant?
  • How do I know if my urine has been flushed out of the gadget and not sent to some tech giant for illegal use?

Tech's Latest Controversy: How To Look Back

In 2021, we spoke about the Great Resignation and the power pendulum shifting toward employees. Last year, the Great Resignation became the Great Reset, as mass firings took charge. And now, in 2023, many have predicted employers completely taking back control with the return of the 5-day work-week.

The major drivers of this trend? Elon Musk and the domino effect. 🎳

A number of entrepreneurs, some citing Elon Musk’s choice to bring Twitter employees back to in-person work, say that they’re planning to bring back a mandatory in-person work culture in the new year because of the issues that are arising from remote work (whether that be productivity or collaboration).

And as few founders take the first steps, the domino effect will set in. If your biggest competitor starts working from the office to boost productivity, you may feel tempted to as well. This is especially true for scrappy early-stage startups that are happily hiring those recently laid off by tech giants and mature startups.
