The GIST - No bad luck here
From The Gist Team
Hey there!
Itâs Friday the 13th, but thereâs no bad luck here, just some housekeeping before we dive in. Weâll be off Monday observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but not before tomorrowâs NFL playoffs special edition (more on that in yesterdayâs episode of The GIST of It) and an Australian Open preview Sunday Scroll hit your inbox. We wouldnât leave you hanging.
- Needless to say, thereâs a big weekend ahead. Letâs get it started with some sports news.

Quote of the Day |
I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I'm looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, âThat's my momâ
â Tennis star Naomi Osaka, announcing sheâs expecting her first child in a âlittle life updateâ via Twitter on Wednesday. Be still our hearts. |

đ NFL: Around and around we go
The GIST: The countdown is on to tomorrowâs NFL postseason kickoff, but a different storyline has been dominating headlines this week: the head coaching (HC) carousel. And while Mondayâs game will likely include some recognition of MLK Jr. Day, the leagueâs performative acts arenât enough to distract from decades of discrimination against Black HCs.
The latest: Last weekendâs regular-season finale gave way to âBlack Monday,â a day when underperforming HCs are often fired. The Houston Texans parted ways with HC Lovie Smith after just one season (more on that in a minute) while the Arizona Cardinals said goodbye to HC Kliff Kingsbury after three disappointing campaigns.
- Those firings mean new HC vacancies, and with it, new rumors. The offseason months are often filled with discussion about which top candidates are interviewing for which roles and predictions of where they might land.
- This year, former New Orleans Saints HC Sean Payton is among the most sought after â three teams have already requested interviews with the Super Bowl champ. Kevin James could never.
The no-background: This is the first full NFL offseason since former Miami Dolphins HC and current Pittsburgh Steelers assistant Brian Flores bravely sued the NFL and three of its teams for alleged racism in their hiring practices, shining a spotlight on a systemic issue that still plagues the league.
- Despite the fact that about 60% of NFL players are Black, the league has just two active Black head coaches (out of a possible 32) following Smithâs firing.
- Speaking of, Smithâs release is the latest in a disturbing pattern for the dumpster fire Texans, who last year fired Black HC David Culley after just one season while failing to commit resources to boost the struggling squad. Pretty fishy.
Whatâs next: The leagueâs Rooney Rule requires teams to interview at least two external minority candidates for every HC vacancy, but as Floresâ lawsuit demonstrated, thereâs a track record of teams bringing in candidates as a way to essentially check a box and satisfy the rule. Time will tell if the league is ready to do the real work and address this unsolved issue.
Quick Hits |
â˝ NWSL
As expected, Angel City FC selected LAâs own 18-year-old phenom Alyssa Thompson with the first overall pick in last nightâs NWSL draft. But no one couldâve predicted what followed. The Kansas City Current traded beloved USWNT forward Lynn Williams to NJ/NY Gotham FC in exchange for the second overall pick, which they used to select Duke forward Michelle Cooper.
- Rounding out the top three was defender Emily Madril. The Florida State star is sticking to the sunshine state with the Orlando Pride.
đşđ¸ USWNT
The more footy news, the better. Two USWNT icons have been nominated for the Best FIFA Football Awards. Forward Alex Morgan is up for Best Womenâs Player, while goalie Alyssa Naeher is up for, you guessed it, Best Womenâs Goalkeeper.
- Love to see it, but we couldnât help but notice U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year Sophia Smithâs absence from the list. What gives?
âž MLB
Content warning: This section contains mention of sexual assault.
Disgraced pitcher Trevor Bauer was (finally) officially released by the LA Dodgers yesterday after having his MLB suspension for sexual assault allegations reduced by the league earlier this month. But that means Bauer is now a free agent and eligible to be signed by any team starting today â a reality giving us a scare on this Friday the 13th.
đ Return of the Gronk
The GIST: Four-time Super Bowl champ and legendary tight end Rob Gronkowski will once again be back in the spotlight for the biggest game of the year, but for a very different reason.
- Heâs teaming up with FanDuel for the âKick of Destiny,â a live field goal attempt which will air as part of a Super Bowl commercial. No pressure.
The stakes: If Gronk nails the kick, FanDuel will split $10M (!!!) in free bets among users who placed a Super Bowl bet of $5 or more ahead of the big game. So what are you waiting for?
The kick: Itâs still unclear how far Gronk will have to boot it, but with a little coaching from retired kicker Adam Vinatieri (whose 599 field goals are an NFL record) there could certainly be more than one winner on game day. Gronk spikeâŚincoming.
Long Weekend Watching |
đđ NCAA womenâs basketball: No. 2 Stanford vs. No. 8 UCLA â Tonight at 11 p.m. ET â Pac-12 Network
- Stanford hasnât lost to a Pac-12 rival in 38 straight games. Will that change tonight in a top-10 showdown against the Bruins? If UCLA senior Charisma Osborne has another standout showing, anythingâs possible.
đ U18 IIHF Womenâs Worlds: USA vs. Sweden â Tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET â NHL Network
- After losing 3â1 to Canada during the group stage on Wednesday, Team USA has a chance for redemption (and to punch their ticket to Sundayâs final) in tomorrowâs semi against Sweden, who they beat 6â3 less than a week ago. Cold as ice.
đ𤸠NCAA gymnastics: Wasatch Classic â Tomorrow at 5 p.m. ET â Sporfie
- Teams are tumbling to Utah for the inaugural two-session Wasatch Classic. Up first are No. 6 UCLA, No. 19 Minnesota, No. 25 Washington and Boise State, followed by No. 3 California, No 16. Iowa, No. 20 Pittsburgh and No. 26 Oregon State.
đşđ¸ USWNT: No. 1 USA vs. No. 24 New Zealand â Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET â HBO Max
- Yes, itâs not technically on the long weekend, but we couldnât not shout out the USWNT, whoâll kick off their World Cup preparation with a friendly against 2023 co-host New Zealand.
- Forward Sophia Smith is sidelined with injury, but the aforementioned Lynn Williams could make her highly anticipated return after a nearly year-long recovery from a hamstring tear. LFG.
