Inverse - 🌌 Ancient galaxy candidates

Jan. 11, 2023

The early Universe should have been a place where galaxies were just beginning to come together. But if recent JWST observations hold true, that may not be the case — there may have been more galaxies at a more mature stage earlier than we thought, leaving astronomers scratching their heads. The news comes out of the 241st meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

Among the first batch of JWST images was SMACS 0723-73, a deep-sky survey of galaxies. Several were found that could correspond to a time between 200 million and 400 million years after the Big Bang, and if those distances hold, "then our previously favored picture of galaxy formation of the Universe must be reversed,” Haojing Yan of the University of Missouri told reporters at a press conference.

Just one way in which NASA's new flagship telescope is rewriting what we know of the Universe.

JWST image may upend our understanding of the early universe

Littered throughout a single James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) snapshot of the distant Universe is a cornucopia of potentially ancient galaxies. And if any are confirmed to be as old as scientists suspect, it could change the existing picture of how the Universe became what it is today.

In a recent study published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, a team of astronomers found a large number of ancient-galaxy candidates from a single JWST image.

Inverse’s 23 most anticipated movies of 2023

What a time it is to be a movie fan. Whether you are excited for the next superhero sequels or the weirdest sci-fi indie, 2023 looks to offer everything a growing cinephile could need.

From neon-drenched hitman fourquels, to sandy sci-fi odysseys, to the last hurrah for our favorite galaxy-protecting idiots, 2023 is shaping up to be a pretty good year for franchises. And outside of the sequel mania, we have a swan song for the greatest anime auteur, a surreal drama featuring too many Joaquin Phoenixes, and a bear that ingested too much cocaine.

Here are the 23 movies Inverse is looking forward to the most in 2023 according to our staff and contributors.

Wireless TVs won CES 2023

Despite the name, CES isn’t just about consumer electronics — it’s about ideas, man.

Sometimes those ideas are good, sometimes they’re outlandish, sometimes they’re, um, whatever this is. Often, at least in my book, the best CES concepts, prototypes, and products have a touch of all of the above, and the one product that really gave us the full spectrum of wow, what, and why is LG’s new wireless OLED TV.

Why is that something you’d want, you ask? Well, if you’re like me, the thought of looking at a rat’s nest of HDMI and power cables is almost enough to make your face turn green. I hate messy cords.

Bog bodies reveal a gruesome trend through history

Europe’s peat bogs are teeming with life — and also death. Due to their unique environment, peat bogs naturally preserve human remains and keep them in remarkable shape for hundreds to thousands of years.

More ancient bodies have been uncovered from bogs than you might think. Experts estimate that at least 2,000 bog mummies and skeletons are known today — and many more are probably still buried.

But how did so many individuals end up in bogs in the first place? A new study published this week in the journal Antiquity investigates 266 historical bog sites, and reveals some violent results.

'Dead Space' remake devs reveal a terrifying change that didn't make the cut

The upcoming Dead Space remake is one of the most anticipated releases of 2023. Developer EA Motive Studio aims to breathe new life into the classic 2008 horror game, while improving upon outdated systems to keep things fresh.

The Dead Space remake didn’t come about as a “corporate mandate” from EA, but rather as a labor of love from Motive, says Realization Director Joel MacMillan.

Inverse spoke with MacMillan and Senior Writer Jo Berry about some of the changes players can expect to see in the remake and what makes a good horror game.
