Another issue of the Top 3 in Tech newsletter hot off the presses. Some exciting news this week, so let's get right into it, shall we?

1. Software engineering tips

This week I came across an awesome Twitter thead by a former engineering manager. He breaks down 12 important things to remember if you work with code, even if you're just starting out.

Some of my personal favourites from the list are #5 (make it work -> make it pretty) and #7 (you don't need permission to add value), but all the tips are amazing.

I think we have a tendency to focus a lot on programming languages and frameworks when learning to code. Like you might start out your coding journey because you really want to learn React or Python.

That's not inherently bad. Starting with something practical is a great way to learn and build some initial motivation and skills.

But at some point it's important to zoom out and remember the other important aspects of being a good engineer. Maybe when you start getting ready for your first coding job, or even if you've been working as a developer for a long time. Some of the principles in the thread are what will truly elevate your career - often moreso than learning the hottest new JavaScript framework.

2. ChatGPT and Whisper API's

Big news came out this week: The model used in OpenAI's ChatGPT product is now available to use via API!

This means you can now build you own products / interfaces on top of the model. I personally think we're gonna see a TON of innovation and cool new usecases of AI as more and more people can now build it directly into their own products.

OpenAI also made their Whisper model available, which is primarily used for transcribing audio to text or translating audio from any language into English.

I'm super excited to play around with these tools and use them in new, creative ways - and I suggest you do the same. It's great fun and will give you a much better understanding of how to work with AI both now and in the future.

3. 10 Rendering Patterns for Web Apps

The last pick for this week is a Youtube video from our old friend, Fireship.

It's a deep-dive into the many different patterns you can use to build modern web applications, including the pros/cons and pitfalls of each model. I know I personally struggled for a long time to really understand the difference between rendering modes - so if you're anything like me, this video will be well worth a watch 😅
