Niche Site Lady - This hurt so much! 😭

I used to manage 10 websites and each had 100,000 pages.

Fun times!

Every webpage needed content, so I devised a system...

(My boss loved it!)

With an Excel spreadsheet, I created a formula using synonyms, random numbers and find & replace to create the content.

For example:

This would make a sentence like:

"Pet-friendly hotels in London often have facilities such as bars and restaurants."

And for another page:

"Cheap campgrounds in New York often have facilities such as casinos and waterslides".

This worked because nobody else had content about 'cheap campgrounds in New York', so we would rank number one.

The massive sites covered every possible search term about accommodation,

So anything that was zero-competition, we would win!

Doesn't that seem like we've come full circle? 

I can see that people are doing the exact same thing again in 2023.

The only difference is that they're using AI instead of my Excel formula.

These sites were doing well, for a while.

Until in 2011, Google's infamous 'Panda' update hit and the sites lost 90% of the traffic overnight.

At that point, I'd never even heard of a Google Update.

I thought that Google Analytics was broken.

While it wasn't my company, it still hurt a lot to see a bunch of my friends lose their jobs. 

And the scars from that time mean that I just can't get on board with any risky, short-term content strategies like bulk publishing with AI.

It costs Google a ton of money to run their operations. 

You think they want to be crawling a load of AI-generated crap?

Of course not.

More than ever, Google wants to send users to the very best content.

So that's what I make.

But how do you know what great content looks like?

With so many different strategies being peddled, it can be hard to know whose example to follow.

Take this popular blogging course creator...

For years, their advice was spot on.

But look at their public example site now:

The sad thing is, 

They've had almost a year to adjust their strategy and turn this around.

But they haven't managed it.

I'm not inside the course, but the public YouTube videos seem very fluffy lately with no real substance or new advice for 2023.

Here's another one...

The homepage of his website says he makes 'over $250k/month. 

Not anymore he doesn't. 

Unless he's counting course sales.

He's pivoted his blogging strategy - into YouTube videos that promise "$500 per day with AI".

But he didn't make his money with AI!

He made it with link-building strategies that don't work any more (and blogging course sales at $1,500 each).

Honestly, it boils my piss.

Recently, Jon Dykstra revealed the URL of his main site to people who are in his course.

I'll admit that the first thing I did was paste it into ahrefs to check out the traffic.

I'm only human.

And yes, his site has also seen a gradual decline between September and January.

But, he's turned it around!

His traffic is on the up again.

And I'm not surprised.

Jon updates his course every time he opens it for new students.

I've just taken the module on 'Traffic Recovery'.

Other new modules I learned from include 'Google News tech set up' and 'AI Content'.

I recently learned I can re-write brand press releases with AI and they show up in Google News and Google Discover!

I also drive traffic to them from social media and email.

Brands love the attention so they give me press trips and better affiliate deals. Woohoo!

This is all new to me.
