Flow State - Erik Hall
Today's recommendation is presented by Sunsama, the only planner that helps you hone your focus. If you're struggling to focus, it's not you – it's your to-do list. Sunsama helps you build focus with their planning and shutdown rituals, along with a special focus mode. You get two weeks free for being a Flow State reader! Good morning. Today we’re listening to Erik Hall, a multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Michigan. We previously recommended him in May 2020, when he released his solo recording of Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich. That record’s meticulousness and phase shifts made it a standby since it came out, and the same characterizations apply to Hall’s new LP from February. Canto Ostinato performs that piece by 20th century Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (another past Flow State recomendee). In Reich and ten Holt’s minimalist pieces, Hall finds a throughline of “gratifying harmonic development,” as he described to the New York Times. And according to Aquarium Drunkard, a third LP in the series is planned. Canto Ostinato - Erik Hall (60m, no vocals) Music for 18 Musicians - Erik Hall (60m, no vocals) Have a really nice Wednesday.
