Adobe-led initiative aims to authenticate digital images

We’ve made it to midweek. Wednesday seems like a good day to discuss the nature of reality, yeah?

AI-generated images have ushered in an era of verisimilitude. We explored an Adobe-led initiative intended to ensure we’re all tethered to the same reality, at least when it comes to viewing images online.

The real real

A German artist made waves last week after he revealed that his winning submission in this year’s Sony World Photography Awards was actually generated by AI.

The stunt, the artist said, was intended to start a conversation about realism in the age of AI, and was the latest example of just how easy it has become for media spawned by AI to deceive even the most discerning viewers.

Andy Parsons, senior director at the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), sees incidents like these as a “wake-up call.” The CAI is a consortium of around 1,000 members, including companies ranging from big-name media outlets and camera makers to tech startups, collectively working to craft a set of standards that they claim could guarantee the authenticity of digital content.

Adobe first formed the group in 2019, but its mandate has become more urgent as new AI tools have made the technology more sophisticated and accessible in the past year or so. That has resulted in viral fake news videos and photos, like one of Donald Trump being arrested in Manhattan, and led Getty Images (which is a CAI member) to ban AI-generated content from being uploaded to its platform.

Mindful tech transforming a $100b untapped market

Aura Health

The greatest tech innovations come from the heart. That’s the story behind Aura.

Aura grew quickly to over 7m users and 100k+ paying subscribers. They attracted investments from well-known Silicon Valley investors like Cowboy Ventures and Berkeley SkyDeck, as well as executives from Spotify, Facebook, MasterClass, and Apple. And they’re just getting started.

Now they’re looking to grow massively using the same model fueling companies like Uber and Airbnb.

SMARTPHONES

A perk of inflation

Apple Event 2020 iPhone 12 Apple

On top of taking photos, making calls, running apps, and serving as a payment method, the iPhone can now hold your savings account.

Last week, Apple announced a high-yield savings account. The product, which is managed by Goldman Sachs, is available for Apple Card users and boasts a 4.15% annual percentage yield (APY), a rate that Apple claims is more than 10x the national average. The account has no fees and no minimum balance or deposit requirements.

Users who open an account will see any cash back earned through the Apple Card’s Daily Cash feature automatically deposited into their new savings account.

So why the latest foray into fintech for the longtime producer of hardware?

“Apple’s strategy is pretty clear. They just want to be a part of everyday life. Whether it’s your financial, whether it’s your shopping habits, whether it’s at some point even medical, they just want to kind of get into all aspects of it,” Marc DeCastro, research director for consumer banking at IDC Financial Insights, told Tech Brew.
