Embodiment, the power of ease, & restoring our natural rhythm: Embodiment points us to this reality that our bodies are much more than we get told in this current moment— It’s the awareness of what we’ve stored and learned and then the promise of what we can be when we really center the body. → Story

Our newsletter this week was supported with love by the team at Algbra, an ethical, sustainable digital finance app designed to connect values and finance. We sat down for an inside look at the career stories of Algbra's team...and a bit of jobseeker advice: they're hiring! 😉 💸💜
What is your “official” professional role and field?
I’m the Head of Marketing at Algbra. My role, put simply, is about taking a campaign from conception to execution. But the diversity in the campaigns and the projects we support is so vast it means I find myself in rooms filled with people from all walks of life, from finance bros to athletes to eco warriors. Anchoring the role in one field is difficult because it extends beyond just marketing a financial service - it’s so much more than just that. It’s marketing, finance, social impact, sustainability & equality wrapped up in one equation.
What is your unofficial role and field?
My unofficial role on some days is TikTok star, cameraman and barista. On others it's a community advocate and event coordinator. How did you get to where you are today in your career?
“Do good stuff” was the first response I had to the infamous “what do you want to do when you grow up” question as a child. Initially that led me down the non-profit route but I always had a natural flair for marketing so I took advantage of opportunities to freelance with marketing agencies alongside the aid work I was involved in.
Pretty soon I noticed a massive disconnect between the way profitable e-commerce brands were operating and how outdated the fundraising world was. I started transferring my marketing insights gathered from the for-profits and taking them to non-profits. When COVID hit, funding streams were further exasperated for charities so I turned my Robin Hood energy into what was essentially a charity service. And it worked. What started as a discussion around a kitchen table with my co-founder and some notes scribbled on the back of a cereal box, soon blossomed into one of few digital fundraising agencies in the UK. Today, CerealBox Agency has fundraised over £37 million pounds for hundreds of projects around the world all through digital marketing. After feeling like I had done some “good stuff” like 6 year old Zaynab had planned - I realised there was more to do when I saw the term “ethical finance” at an Algbra sponsored event. It was Ramadan and I was sitting on the floor of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London where an Open Iftar was being held. This is an initiative led by an organisation called the Ramadan Tent Project that hosts public meals at sunset where people gather to break their fast - the premise is simple, turning strangers into friends. And that day I met more than just new friends - I met Algbra. I reached out to the team and knew it was something I needed to be a part of. Fastfoward to this Ramadan I had the pleasure of returning to that same venue and standing in front of the guests I was once sitting amongst, representing Algbra to share an opportunity to make a small lifestyle change that will have a profound impact on the rest of the world. This being to join our movement towards a fairer, more ethical financial system that doesn’t compromise our values. Your relationship to “social impact”: has it evolved since you began your career?
More than I ever imagined. Being at the heart of humanitarian and emergency aid facilitated through the agency locked me into a world in which social impact is about creating funding for access to basic necessities - like food, water, shelter. All of which is integral but only seeks to solve one end of a much larger problem.
Joining Algbra meant I had the opportunity to contribute to reforming the institutional wrongdoings that have played a part in shaping a world in which these vast inequalities exist. The long term structural vision of Algbra - to eradicate financial exclusion - meant that I was now able to contribute to solving the root cause of the problems I spent my career dealing with.
More significantly, the progression of my career brought social change down from a global to personal scale. It called into question my own lifestyle choices including my finances by helping me see that social change is, at its core, about personal change. Lessons you’re taking away from the first few years of your work experience, and applying to the next chapters of your career.
Don’t box yourself in. I started my career on one end of the spectrum in the charity sector and transitioned across to the complete opposite field of finance. None of which would have been possible if I had limited myself to the confines of the status quo.
And I’d also hope I continue to carry forward the following phrase I saw on a poster hanging on the wall if my 2nd grade classroom:
إفعل الخير، وسيعود الخير لك
Do good and good will come to you.
Let’s say you were reading a job application from someone hoping to join your team: what would stand out, and attract you to working with them?
When we read a job application, we look for candidates who share our values, connect with your mission and strategic mission. We love it when candidates have experience in a related industry, especially with a focus on ethics or social good, but we're also interested in hearing from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
In addition to skills and experience, we look for candidates who are great communicators and team players. We're a dynamic and fast-paced company, so we want people who can adapt to changing situations and work well under pressure.
At the end of the day, we're looking for people who are committed to making a positive impact on the world. If you're passionate about ethical finance, want to work with a fun and engaging team, and are excited about making a difference, then we want to hear from you!
