Trump Verdict, Breast Cancer, and a New Photo of Earth

Trump Civil Verdict

A federal jury in a civil trial yesterday found former President Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation of journalist E. Jean Carroll, ordering Trump to pay $5M in damages. 

Carroll, 79, filed a lawsuit over battery and defamation charges in November. During the two-week trial, she testified that in the mid-1990s, Trump, now 76, raped her in a dressing room of a department store in Manhattan. Carroll also testified Trump harmed her reputation last fall by accusing her of lying. 

The jury of six men and three women was tasked with deciding whether Trump more likely than not raped, sexually abused, or forcibly touched Carroll. They found Trump had not raped Carroll, but it was likely he had sexually abused her. The threshold for proving civil claims is lower than in criminal cases.

Trump didn't attend the trial; however, in a videotaped deposition under oath, he claimed Carroll's allegations were for publicity and political reasons. Trump maintains he didn't sexually abuse Carroll and didn't know her. He plans to file an appeal. 

Imran Khan Arrested

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested on corruption charges yesterday, intensifying political tensions ahead of an October election. He was taken into custody by a paramilitary group upon arriving at a court hearing in Islamabad, where he faced separate corruption allegations.

The former cricket star was elected in 2018 but faced criticism over corruption and economic issues, leading to a no-confidence vote against him in 2022. Khan opposed the vote, dissolved parliament, and accused his opponents of a politically motivated plot, even suggesting US involvement.

Khan's arrest threatens to worsen the political and economic unrest in Pakistan. While the government denies political motivation and asserts the rule of law, Khan accuses the government of delaying national elections and colluding with the military. Khan remains popular as inflation has risen to above 36% under the new government and as the country seeks an International Monetary Fund bailout.

The arrest sparked violent protests throughout the country. Khan is expected to appear at an anticorruption tribunal today.

Earlier Cancer Screenings

The independent US Preventive Services Task Force yesterday recommended all women should receive a mammogram every other year starting at age 40, 10 years earlier than previous guidelines. The announcement comes as breast cancer diagnoses have increased among younger women and as the fatality rate of Black women remains nearly twice as high as white women. 

Breast cancer is the second most common, and second deadliest, form of cancer in women, with one out of eight women diagnosed in their lifetime. The American Cancer Society estimates roughly 300,000 women will be diagnosed this year, while over 40,000 will die. Breast cancer mortality has dropped significantly over the last few decades, though there is debate as to whether the drop is due to increased screenings or better treatment.

The panel also pushed for more research on the disease's racial disparities as well as techniques to more effectively screen women with dense breasts, a condition that affects over half of the population. See the new guidelines here.
