The GIST - Put your records on
From The Gist Team |
Happy Monday!
Hope your weekend’s been as great as Michael Block’s. The 46-year-old PGA club pro, who teaches golf lessons at a course in California, not only hit a hole-in-one at yesterday’s PGA Championship, he qualified for next year’s event with a top 15 finish. Doesn’t get better than this.
- Here’s to a week of even more magical moments…

I’m back! |
|
— Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner, in her home debut following her wrongful detainment in Russia. BG didn’t miss a beat in her return, even surpassing Sylvia Fowles for third-overall on the league’s all-time blocks list yesterday. Welcome home. |

🏀 Didn’t see that coming
The GIST: The promised ultra-competitive Conference Finals are not living up to the hype, with two teams poised to sweep their respective series. Ready the brooms.
Eastern Conference Final: In a twist no one saw coming, the Miami Heat — who squeaked into the postseason via the play-in tournament — are one win away from booking their Finals ticket after throttling the Boston Celtics 128–102 in Game 3 last night. The Heat’s Jimmy Butler spread the wealth in the team effort, while Boston looked sloppy with the pressure on.
- And the odds for a comeback are not in the Celtics’ favor. NBA teams have an all-time 0-149 record when down 3-0 in a best-of-seven series. See if Boston’s Jayson Tatum can humbly save his team’s season tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Western Conference Final: The LA Lakers also find themselves in a must-win situation after the Denver Nuggets handed them their first postseason home-court loss on Saturday. Now Nikola Jokić and the Nugs need just one more dub to clinch their first-ever franchise Finals appearance, but Lakers head coach Darvin Ham thinks his squad isn’t done just yet. We’ll see tonight at 8:30 p.m. ET.
🏒 Never much love
The GIST: All four Conference Finals games have gone to overtime (OT), and with two squads taking early 2-0 leads, it’s brought some serious tension. Drake wasn’t lying about OT.
Western Conference Final: Thanks to forward Chandler Stephenson’s OT game-winner, the Vegas Golden Knights successfully defended their home fortress yesterday, topping the Dallas Stars 3–2.
- Lucky for Dallas, this series will shift to the Lone Star State tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET.
Eastern Conference Final: Speaking of a lone star, the wild card Florida Panthers’ newfound OT hero Matthew Tkachuk (pronounced kuh-CHUCK) came in clutch yet again during Saturday’s 2–1 OT win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
- Now the Panthers will look to pounce on home-ice advantage when the marathon continues with Game 3 tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
✨ State-of-the-art is just the start
The GIST: With less than two months before the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off, the excitement is building…but 57 athletes from the world’s top women’s soccer leagues will be watching the sport’s ultimate competition from home. The reason? ACL injuries.
The MVP: It’s not just the pros sidelined by knee injuries — teenage girls are three times more likely to suffer ACL tears than teen boys. Enter: The team at Boston Children’s Hospital. They know how devastating this injury can be for young female athletes, so they poured years of research into ACL repair and injury prevention — and they’re seeing incredible results.
- Learn more about the Boston Children’s ACL Program by listening to the doctor who paved the way for a revolutionary treatment or by checking out their best-in-class Sports Medicine Division dedicated to keeping tomorrow’s stars healthy. Truly unbe-knee-vable.

⛳ LIV golfer wins PGA Championship
With a chorus of boos as the backdrop, Brooks Koepka became the first LIV golfer to win a major yesterday — completing the feat at the PGA Championship. The victory marked Koepka’s fifth career major and third PGA Championship title.
🎓🥎 NCAA softball Super Regionals set
After a weekend of 64-team, double-elimination action, 16 squads are through to next week’s Supers, but one top competitor won’t be joining them. No. 2 UCLA — the winningest program in NCAA softball history — failed to win a single game at their own regional and saw their season surprisingly cut short.
- Elsewhere, No. 3 Florida State pitcher Kathryn Sandercock helped avenge her squad’s own early exit last season, tossing a perfect game against South Carolina yesterday to send her ’Noles to the next round. Sorry, Hannah.
🏇 The Preakness Stakes overshadowed by another horse death
National Treasure won Saturday’s Preakness Stakes, making controversial trainer Bob Baffert the winningest in the history of the race. But the victory was overshadowed by yet another horse death, as one of Baffert’s other horses was euthanized on the track hours ahead of the Preakness.
🎾 Former World No. 1 Simona Halep faces second doping charge
The two-time Grand Slam champ, who’s been provisionally suspended from the WTA Tour since testing positive for a banned substance at the 2022 U.S. Open, was accused of a second doping offense by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Friday.
- The ITIA says that they found irregularities in her athlete biological passport, which provide a baseline reading of substances in an athlete’s body. Halep, meanwhile, published a statement saying she was a “victim of contamination.”
