It’s no secret that demand for houseplants has surged. We first spotted the trend back in 2019, and it’s continued to grow:

Now, plant parents (yes, really: #PlantParent has 1.2B+ views on TikTok) are turning to exotic, rare varieties — ones that are a challenge to care for and cultivate.

Here are some unbeleafable opportunities:

• Meat eaters: The r/SavageGarden subreddit has seen its following soar to 168k+ subscribers, many of whom dote on their carnivorous plant pets.
  
  

• Aquatic flora: Planted tanks (AKA aquascapes) have nearly doubled in popularity since the start of 2022 to over 120k subreddit subscribers.
  
  
• Moss madness: r/Mosses has shot up from less than 50k followers at the beginning of 2021 to more than 230k today. Oh, and moss wall art is a thing.
  
  
• Living tables: Interest remains high which means you could start a side hustle building them for restaurants and bars (pick your own herbs, anyone?).

PR can do wonders for scaling your business, but it can be tough to pull off as a solo founder.

So we talked to experts who have helped clients get featured in publications like The New York Times and Forbes to bring you the PR Guide For Solo Founders.

Here are the cliff notes:

1. Understand your audience: When it comes to getting media attention, writers and editors decide what to publish. Do your homework on individual journalists and try to pitch relevant content, not just self-promote.
   
   

2. Build your rolodex: Search for articles that were written about your competitors and make a list of who published them. It’s important to focus on quality, but try targeting at least 50 journalists to start. Log all of your outreach (cough HubSpot CRM cough)
   
   

3. Share your story: Aim to grab attention immediately. The first few lines should be hyper-personalized to show you’ve done your research. Follow that with info on your company, the problem you solve, and links the journalist can use to check you out. Then close with a specific ask of what you’re looking for.

Media outreach should be an ongoing part of your strategy. Over time you’ll build relationships with journalists, making it much easier to pitch high-quality stories.
