The GIST - Our favorite’s gouda
From The Gist Team |
Missed you!
Hope you had a rejuvenating long weekend, because there was no rest in the sports world: the NCAA softball Women’s College World Series, NBA Finals, and NHL Finals matchups are all set, and we’ll have special edition previews for all three marquee events hitting your inbox over the next few days.
- But not everything’s celebration-worthy in the sports world: with Pride Month starting tomorrow, Alabama became the latest state to enact restrictions on trans athletes yesterday. Keep an eye out for new merch dropping soon with a clear message for this bigotry.

Quote of the Day |
I just remember hitting my head, and now I have the cheese. |
|
— Nineteen-year-old Canadian contestant Delaney Irving, who won the chaotic U.K. cheese wheel race yesterday despite being knocked unconscious while chasing the seven-pound wheel of Double Gloucester down a hill in southwest England. Talk about rolling with the punches. |

⛳ Everything’s coming up Rose
The GIST: Twenty-year-old golfer Rose Zhang is a Stanford Cardinal, a Hello Kitty fan, and, as of tomorrow, the most exciting amateur to turn pro since Tiger Woods. This may be the first time you’re hearing this prodigy’s name, but it certainly won’t be the last.
The no-background: Last week, Zhang made history as the first collegiate women’s golfer to win back-to-back national titles. Her 12 tournament wins at Stanford broke a school record held by the aforementioned Woods. And did we mention she did it as a sophomore? A sophomore who notably also snagged Adidas’ first name, image and likeness (NIL) deal.
- But that’s not surprising, considering Zhang has been the No. 1 World Amateur Golfer since 2020. She did shock the world shortly after winning her second natty, though, when she announced she was forfeiting her last two years of NCAA eligibility to turn pro.
What’s next: Zhang is expected to make her LPGA debut in the Mizuho Americas Open, which tees off tomorrow from Jersey City, New Jersey, and compete in all four of this summer’s majors.
- Although the golf world is eager to crown their next superstar, Zhang is keeping her own expectations low. After all, once this weekend’s tourney wraps up, she has three final exams to take.
⚾ Swing and a miss
The GIST: On the eve of Pride Month, MLB is making all the wrong headlines, with ongoing controversy surrounding the LA Dodgers’ upcoming Pride Night and a Toronto Blue Jays pitcher sharing anti-LGBTQIA+ posts. A major whiff.
LA Dodgers Pride Night: ICYMI: earlier this month, the Dodgers disinvited then promptly re-invited a non-profit LGBTQIA+ advocacy group called the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to their June 16th Pride Night. The Sisters have long been at the forefront of the LGBTQIA+ movement and use drag attire mixed with religious imagery to “expose the forces of bigotry.”
- The Dodgers initially cited “the strong feelings of people who have been offended by the sisters’ inclusion” as their reasoning for rescinding, then reversed course after facing significant backlash from the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond.
- But the story doesn’t end there. Washington Nationals pitcher Trevor Williams issued a statement no one asked for yesterday, saying he’s “deeply troubled” by the Dodgers’ support of the Sisters, while beloved Dodger Clayton Kershaw said he did not agree with the team’s decision to include them. Give us a break.
Anthony Bass: On Monday, the already controversial Jays relief hurler shared a video on social media endorsing boycotts of Target and Bud Light due to the companies’ Pride campaigns.
- Bass issued an “apology” yesterday, saying that he’ll better educate himself moving forward and that the “ball park is for everybody,” but many are still calling for the Jays to drop him, especially with their own Pride Night set for next weekend.
🤕 Don’t wanna be hurt again
The GIST: Whether it's a minor performance limitation or a career-ending catastrophe, every athlete will deal with an injury at least once. But it’s not just physical setbacks that they suffer — the effects of injuries reach far beyond the field of play.
- That’s why the team at Boston Children’s Hospital works overtime to improve injury diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. They know how important it is for kids to stay in the game.
The dream team: Boston Children’s isn’t just revolutionizing injury repair. Their team of surgeons, sports psychologists, physical therapists, and other providers is dedicated to keeping players from even becoming patients with cutting-edge injury prevention programs. Teamwork makes the dream your knees work.
