Morning Brew - ☕ Take note

Meeting summaries are a hot task for AI.

Emerging Tech Brew

It’s Friday. Meetings—universally reviled though they may be—are pretty much a fact of life if you spend most of your workday behind a keyboard. While we’ve not yet nailed down how to make the meetings themselves more palatable, enterprise software giants are enlisting the help of AI to at least make meetings’ aftermath more manageable.

Summarize this

As companies grapple with how to put generative AI tech to work in the office, taking notes on meetings is emerging as a clear use case.

Salesforce said last month it would roll out a suite of tools, including a summarization feature for calls and messages in Slack; Zoom recently teamed with OpenAI and Anthropic to offer similar tools for video meetings; and Microsoft now includes AI-generated recaps in its subscription tier for Teams.

Now, Cisco has joined the fray with new tools that use AI to help catch workers up on chats, meetings, and any other mentions on Webex and Security Cloud.

Cautious optimism

Despite recent hand-wringing from experts about AI’s potential to wipe out humanity, office workers are more optimistic and curious than worried.

At least that was the conclusion Boston Consulting Group drew from a recent survey in which it asked around 12,900 employees, managers, and leaders about their feelings toward the technology.

About 61% and 52% ranked curiosity and optimism, respectively, among their top five sentiments when it comes to AI, with only 30% listing “concern.” The findings marked a shift from 2018, when only 35% of respondents were optimistic and 40% were concerned (curiosity remained more or less the same).

“I was a little surprised just by the degree of optimism,” Steve Mills, chief AI ethics officer, managing director, and partner at Boston Consulting Group, told Tech Brew.

GAMING

State of play

State of play Getty Images

Following the pandemic-induced boom times of 2021, venture-capital firms have significantly scaled back their investments in gaming startups, according to PitchBook’s Q1 2023 Gaming Report.

The overall industry continues to grow: PitchBook estimated that the gaming industry was worth $447.3 billion in 2022 and projects that figure will reach $562.3 billion by 2026.

Venture-capital funding for gaming startups, however, has diminished since 2021, when VCs were happily opening their checkbooks to startups of all stripes.

COOL CONSUMER TECH

Apple

Usually, we write about the business of tech. Here, we highlight the *tech* of tech.

Between you and me: The Verge helpfully rounded up the press images from Apple showing alleged use cases for the Vision Pro, and they decidedly showcase a narrative of everyday wear. We’re skeptical that consumers will find it worthwhile to spend $3,500 to put ski goggles between their eyeballs and their children. We’ll find out for sure when the headset hits the shelves…

ISO affordable midsize electric SUV: We keep an eye out for positive reviews of modestly priced new EVs because we’re sick of gas pumps that shout ads at us while we’re filling up our tanks. (And, you know, there are also the obvious environmental benefits.) CNET and TechCrunch had kind words to say about the Volvo EX30. Interest piqued.

BITS AND BYTES

Stat: Zero. The number of times Apple mentioned AI during its Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this week, “a notable omission given that its competitors like Microsoft and Google have been heavily focusing on generative AI at the moment,” Ars Technica reported.

Quote: “Pull the emergency brake…Are the economic benefits worth the harms to these children?”—Brian Levine, director of the UMass Rescue Lab, to the Wall Street Journal in a story about how Instagram reportedly helps facilitate a “vast pedophile network”
