“In order to be accepted, I had to assimilate. I had to be part of the American dream, not even really knowing what that dream was. Perhaps that is a societal corruption: the deterioration of one's culture all just to fit in.”

Omaha native Charles Kay Jr. is a first-generation Thai-American visual artist whose work explores assimilation, identity and the American Dream. Growing up, Kay tried hard to remain unnoticed and fit into white American culture. In doing so, he lost a part of who he was and where he came from. But anti-Asian hate and violence shook him awake. In his CreativeMornings/Omaha talk, which takes place within his exhibition “Unseen: Emerging from the Currents of Assimilation” at KANEKO, Kay shares his journey back to his roots using his top 5 songs of 2022 Spotify playlist as scaffolding. Watch Charles Kay Jr.’s evolution from invisibility to standing tall and hear his heartfelt “Thank you for seeing me.”
