A great day for Nvidia, major layoffs at Juul, and the SEC approves sweeping new rules for VC, PE and hedge funds

The Securities & Exchange Commission today approved sweeping new rules aimed at overhauling the way PE, VC, and hedge funds deal with their investors. The agency voted 3-2 to adopt the new requirements, which restrict the ability of fund managers to entice large investors by offering them special deals, known as side letters, for better terms than other investors. The SEC will also require private funds to provide their investors quarterly financial statements detailing their performance and expenses, and to undergo annual audits. More here.

From the New York Times: Nvidia said today that heavy demand from cloud computing services and other customers for its chips that power AI systems caused revenue for its second quarter to jump 101% from a year earlier, to $13.5 billion, while profit surged more than ninefold to nearly $6.2 billion. The latest quarter, which ended in July, was even better than what Nvidia had projected in late May, when its $11 billion revenue estimate for the second quarter stunned Wall Street and helped push Nvidia’s market value above $1 trillion for the first time. During its earnings call, Nvidia also dispelled one of investors’ biggest concerns: that chip production won’t keep up with demand. Though Nvidia didn’t give long-term projections, CEO Jensen Huang said today that supply will “substantially increase for the rest of this year and next year.” More in Bloomberg.

Cellares, a four-year-old South San Francisco startup that is developing technology for cell therapy manufacturing, raised a $225 million Series C round led by Koch Disruptive Technologies, with Bristol Myers Squibb, DFJ Growth, Willett Advisors, and previous investors Eclipse, Decheng Capital, and 8VC also investing. Dice, a nine-year-old London startup that has built an events discovery and ticketing platform, raised a $65 million led by MUSIC, with Structural Capital, Ahdritz Holding, Exor Ventures, and Mirabaud also joining in. The company has raised a total of $134.8 million. TechCrunch has more here.

Gympass, an 11-year-old New York company that allows companies to provide their employees with access to a network of gyms and personal trainers, raised an $85 million Series F round at a $2.4 billion valuation. The deal lead was EQT Growth, with General Atlantic and Moore Strategic Ventures also pitching in. The company has raised a total of $605 million. The WSJ has more here.

Rapport Therapeutics, a one-year-old Boston startup that is developing precision drugs for brain and nervous system disorders, raised a $150 million Series B round led by Cormorant Asset Management, with Fidelity, Goldman Sachs, Logos Capital, Perceptive Advisors, Sofinnova Investments, Surveyor Capital, and T. Rowe Price as well as previous investors Third Rock Ventures, Arch Venture Partners, and J&J also piling on. BioPharma Dive has more here.

SpyCloud, a seven-year-old Austin startup that says it sells identity protection software to some of the biggest companies in the U.S., raised a $110 million round led by Riverwood Capital. More here.

Thyme Care, a three-year-old Nashville startup that works with payers, employers, and providers to offer care to individuals living with cancer, raised a $60 million Series B round co-led by Town Hall Ventures and Foresite Capital, with additional financing provided by Andreessen Horowitz, AlleyCorp, Casdin Capital, and Frist Cressey Ventures. Bushel, a six-year-old startup based in Fargo, N.D., that has built a grain trading platform used by more than 100,000 farmers and 2,600 grain and ag retail facilities in North America, raised a $26 million round led by The Banc Funds, with 50 South Capital, The Andersons Inc., Cargill, Germin8, Lewis & Clark AgriFood, The Scoular Co., and Conti Ventures also taking part. Electric Era, a four-year-old Seattle startup that has built a network of EV charging stations, raised an $11.5 million Series A round led by HSBC Asset Management and including SQM Lithium Ventures, Blackhorn Ventures, and Proeza Ventures. Fulcrum, a three-year-old Minneapolis startup that is developing supply chain software for small to midsize manufacturers, raised an $18 million round led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with Waybury Capital as well as previous investors Battery Ventures, Motivate Venture Capital, and Schematic Ventures also participating. Abbey Labs, a one-year-old San Francisco startup whose platform is designed to give engineers the ability to build secure infrastructure into their applications, raised a $5.3 million seed round led by Point72 Ventures, with Haystack and Essence Ventures also stepping up. CakeResume, a seven-year-old Taipei startup that sources job candidates for companies like Google, L’Oréal, and TSMC and whose platform allows applicants to post multimedia résumés, raised a $5 million Series A round led by previous investor Mynavi. Pest Share, a two-year-old startup based in Boise, Id., that provides an app that renters and landlords can use to address pest issues, raised a $4.5 million seed round co-led by MetaProp and Capital Eleven, with additional investors including Vesta Ventures and Far Out Venture Capital. Executives from the shuttered digital health company Pear Therapeutics are launching a new VC firm, offering early access to new startups formed by serial biotech entrepreneur Bob Langer. Former Pear CEO Corey McCann and former licensing head Michael Langer formed the new firm, T.rx Capital, earlier this year, according to three people with knowledge of the firm and documents reviewed by STAT. Michael Langer, the son of Bob Langer, confirmed the news to STAT, telling the outlet that they have set a $175 million cap for its first fund. More here.

Yahoo has acquired CommonStock, a three-year-old social platform designed for retail investors to share insights based on information linked directly to their brokerage accounts, Yahoo tells Axios. The company had raised around $34 million, according to CrunchBase, including from investors Bill Ackman, Ari Emanuel and Jill Carlson. Terms of the deal aren't being disclosed. More here.

Internet startup VNG filed for an initial public offering in the U.S., making it the first Vietnamese technology company to seek a listing in New York and adding to a diversifying roster of companies planning listings. Formerly known as Vinagame, VNG develops and publishes its own titles as well as local versions of international hits, and has gradually expanded to a wide range of services, such as music sharing, video streaming, messaging, a news portal and mobile payments. According to the WSJ, Juul Labs plans to lay off roughly 30% of its workforce, as it seeks to raise capital or sell the company. The e-cigarette maker has been on tenuous financial footing since U.S. regulators last year ordered its vaping products off the market, then suspended the ban pending the company’s appeal.
