Identity change, asking better questions, and The Sit-and-Rise Test
Welcome to this week’s edition of Supercharged Sundays, a super short weekly newsletter sharing three hyperpractical health, fitness, and wellness practices for your week ahead. Here are this week’s experiments. Feel free to adopt what works for you and discard the rest. Change Your Identity, Change Your HabitsEvery belief you hold is learned through experience. The more evidence you have to support a belief, the more strongly you will believe it. This works for both positive constructive beliefs and negative destructive beliefs. If you did well in school, you probably built the belief that you are smart. The more tests you aced, the stronger that belief was forged and the more deeply ingrained in your identity it became. If your first relationship failed and you told yourself that you were a person that just can’t hold a healthy relationship, you probably continued to self-destruct all future relationships, building a pile of evidence to solidify your belief. Our default circuit is to let our habits create evidence that shapes our identity. As James Clear wrote, “Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.” But we can flip this feedback loop on its head. Instead of habits informing our identity, we can change our identity to inform our habits. And once our habits change, even in the smallest way, we can begin stacking up a new pile of evidence to inform our more constructive beliefs. Here’s how it works...
