Eyes On

On Their Worst Behavior

The Story

After another incident at a concert, public etiquette is once again in the spotlight.

Finding my seat.

You’ll need it. During a recent Las Vegas show, Adele told security to ‘go easy on’ a fan who’d been reprimanded for singing and standing throughout the performance. It follows a wave of events where concertgoers have caused a commotion: In July, fans interrupted Miranda Lambert for a photo sesh. Bebe Rexha needed stitches after being hit with a phone. Plus, flying objects have also disrupted shows by Kelsea Ballerini, Drake, and more. And tourists aren’t behaving any better. See: Americans sneaking into the Eiffel Tower for a drunken sleepover. A French woman carving her initials and a heart into the Leaning Tower of Pisa. And a visitor scaling Rome’s Trevi Fountain to refill her water bottle

What in the world is going on?

A lot, apparently. After more than a year of pandemic-related restrictions, both travel and live music have since returned in full force — and with that comes more opportunities for things to go wrong. Not to mention that limitations on gatherings and events may have also taken a toll on people’s social skills, behavior, and levels of anxiety, according to some experts. Another thing that happened while everyone was ‘bored in the house?’ People scrolled, then scrolled some more — forging even closer connections with musicians and celebs. As a result, some believe that might’ve made online and IRL boundaries even blurrier. And that’s not the only reason experts are pointing to social media. Enter: main character energy and the focus on ‘going viral.’ Better pictures and videos mean better content, which might explain why it sometimes feels like everyone’s phone is always out.

After a string of chaotic incidents, people are saying ‘no encore, please.’ So consider this a reminder to brush up on concert and travel etiquette.

What's Happening

🧘‍♀️ In wellness…

Produce prescriptions are putting a fresh spin on vegging out. That’s as some experts are throwing cold water on daily electrolyte supplements. And, according to some TikTokers, all your dreams could come true if you just bay leaf

📱In tech…

Hold the iPhone — more people are picking up foldable phones. Also, if you’re still booked and busy with virtual meetings, AI summaries may help get the job done. Meanwhile, canceled YouTube stars are finding a new following on TikTok. And watch out Insta, group chats may be coming for you.

👕 In style...

As the booming brow business continues to raise, well, brows, micro-bangs are no longer on the fringe (see: Kim Kardashian). Plus, “iced coffee” nails are making a latte news. In fashion, brands are on the dot, while shoppers are putting prep in their step — by taking a page from a 1980s handbook. And that’s not the only book with main character energy.

Skimm Picks

Here are today’s recs to help you live a smarter life…

1. Cooking gear you’ll want to grab before it sells out (again).

Caraway’s first-ever prep collection is non-toxic, thoughtfully designed, and made in limited quantities to avoid overproduction that contributes to deforestation. Which is great for the environment, and your kitchen — but not great for procrastinators.*

2. What our editors were obsessed with last month.

It may be September, but we can’t stop thinking about the essence that transformed our skin. Psst...we’ll never get over these bowls either.

3. Late summer reads you’ll be itching to binge.

No idea what to pick up next? Try one of these books — they’re the perfect way to close out the season.

Sunday Scaries, Who?

Here’s one tip for a better start to your week.

Need a good laugh? Thankfully, raunchy comedies are having a comeback. In fact, just this summer, there’s been “No Hard Feelings,” “Joy Ride,” “Strays,” and “Bottoms,” which hit theaters Friday. Not to mention there’s always the laugh-out-loud classics, like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Wedding Crashers.” So stock up on your go-to snacks and beat the Sunday — or Monday — scaries with one of these staff faves…

Lizzy Bryce, senior branded video producer: “I just saw ‘Bottoms’ and I’ve never heard a theater laugh so hard. Plus, it was made by an all-women creative team, from the writers to the director to the cinematographer.”

Shannon Corrigan, senior creative manager: “‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall.’ It’s my fiance’s favorite movie, so that’s probably why I’ve seen it so many times. Also, I love Jason Segel. But then again, the cast is stacked with good comedians. I always forget that Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig are in it until they show up again.”

Melanie De Lima, Daily Skimm writer: “‘Girls Trip.’ It feels so relatable to see a group of friends have what seems like genuine fun and handle all the mishaps in a hilarious way.”

Jax Giddes, director of business development: “‘Old School’ has so much to like: the cast (Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Jeremy Piven), the setting, the group of incoming frat brothers, and the tons of catchy quotes. I also now understand and support Frank's definition of a ‘nice little Saturday,’ which includes a trip to Home Depot to buy wallpaper and flooring.”

Allison Horrell, senior product designer: “‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’ It’s ridiculous, extra cringe, and hilarious to watch cocky men from the ’80s and ’90s fail so magnificently.”

Brianne Morris, senior account executive: “‘American Pie 2.’ It’s a feel-good movie with so many hilarious one-liners — which my husband and I randomly say to each other. No matter what’s going on in life, throw it on, and you’re going to laugh for hours.”

Kathryn Nachreiner, senior account executive: “‘Bridesmaids’ is the rare [movie] where you get to see female characters be so raunchy, yet still sentimental — without being cloying. It’s truly a ‘best buddy’ movie, and the characters are insanely fantastic, too. Not to mention it exposed the world to the genius of Melissa McCarthy.”

Claudia Rupcich, parenting writer: “Some raunchy comedies don’t age well, but ‘Superbad’ is an exception. It’s as funny today as it was when it came out more than 15 years ago. It has an amazing cast and it’s full of memorable  — and extremely quotable — moments.”

Sophie Stone, editorial operations manager: “I recently rediscovered ‘The Sweetest Thing.’ Though, I prefer to ignore the main character’s romantic storyline and instead focus on the hilarious hijinks and frankly embarrassingly accurate portrayal of female best friendships.”
