It’s been a downright brutal year for digital news. Announcements of layoffs and shutdowns have come fast and furious.
The latest gut punch came when the Texas Tribune, one of the most admired nonprofit news outlets in the country, announced that they were laying off 10 percent of their staff, the first layoffs in their history.
The Intercept is facing the same headwinds affecting our colleagues at virtually every other news organization in the country. We have crucial reporting and in-depth investigations planned for the year ahead — and we’re asking you, our readers, to step up and support The Intercept’s journalism in these difficult times for digital news.
Will you make a donation to help support the hard-hitting investigative journalism of The Intercept?

Fourteen years ago, the Texas Tribune was founded as a nonprofit digital news organization relying on reader donations as a key source of funding. They’ve published remarkable investigative journalism, breaking stories that few if any other news outlets could have uncovered.
But it’s never been harder to run a digital news operation. Nonprofit and commercial outlets alike are dealing with rising costs, social media platforms suppressing news, and readers squeezed by inflation. This year alone, outlets like Vice Media have filed for bankruptcy and cut staff, while others, including BuzzFeed News, shut down entirely.
We’re feeling the same pressures every day here at The Intercept.
We believe the best days are ahead for digital media. But there’s no sugarcoating it: This is a difficult period of transition. One of the keys that will help carry nonprofit news outlets like The Intercept through this time is the financial support of readers.
