Yesterday, we talked about Mozart. You have to be careful talking about Mozart, though, because he was a child prodigy; and child prodigies are as scarce as hen’s teeth, crocodile feathers and horse wings.

They happen rarely and never without a spectacular amount of divine intervention. While I certainly don’t subscribe to any one religion, I am a believer; and I genuinely believe that some greater power made Mozart because he or she or they became bored by whatever the dead composers were orchestrating in heaven at the time.

But, where the hell does that leave the rest of us mere mortals?

We collectively feel both in awe of (and jealous by) the child prodigy because of the ease in which their talents find them.

While we will never in our lives experience the same level of “ease” in our crafts that Mozart felt hammering away at his piano, we can utilize varying degrees of “ease” as a compass.

In Scott Adams book, How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, the cartoonist writes that…

Things that will someday work out well start out well. Things that will never work start out bad and stay that way.

”

Let’s place a pin in vocation for just a moment and redirect our focus towards love (specifically love of the romantic kind).

Chances are you’ve found yourself in love a handful of times. Sometimes with individuals who deserve your love. Other times, with individuals who don’t.

Speaking to the later, we don’t always have jurisdiction over where our hearts choose to wander and, occasionally, we find ourselves in love with a soul so despicable the devil wouldn’t use it for his personal cum rag.

If you take a long, hard look at your romantic relationships that have ended in fire, you will very likely notice they began with a considerable bit of smoke.

When we’re young and dumb, we believe that love is like a fairytale. We believe that we can be the one that finally helps her shake her ex. We believe that we can be the one that helps him conquer his Vicodin addiction. We believe that love can begin badly and then somehow miraculously make a comeback in the 4th quarter. But, love doesn’t work this way.

The love that is good in the end, starts out good in the beginning; and the love that is bad in end, started out bad in the beginning.

This doesn’t mean good love is perfect (you will still spend a small fortune on therapy, wading through one another’s bullshit). But, it does mean that it will feel worth it.

Vocation is the same as love in that when you first pick it up, it should feel good. It should show signs of promise. And, most importantly, it should excite you and energize you and fill up your cup.

Yes, you will still suck miserably at it and you will have to put in a hell of a lot of work to become competent. But, that work will feel less heavy and less cruel because you will love what you’re doing.

If you’re struggling to find your vocation, try lots of things and pay attention to the things that feel just a little bit easier than others.

Then, keep trying at these things.
