Hispanic Heritage Month

This Friday marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. In celebration, dive into this audio archive of poems in English and Spanish, featuring Francisco Aragón, María Luisa ArroyoJaime Manrique, and others.

The Academy of American Poets mourns the loss of Ethelyn Chase, who served as the Academy’s first President after founder Marie Bullock. Mrs. Chase devoted much of her life to poetry and literature, including founding the American Poets’ Corner at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, New York.

In her memory, we share Anthony Hecht’s words which were printed in the Academy’s sixtieth anniversary booklet: “It is only the beginning of justice to claim that [Ethelyn] has labored with unflagging energy, cheerfulness, and dazzling success to advance the cause of our nation’s poetry, as well as the poetry of other nations, in ways for which all poets, as well as all readers of poetry, cannot fail to be grateful.”

We are pleased to announce that poet Elizabeth Bradfield and climate scientist Kate Marvel will judge the 2024 Treehouse Climate Action Poem Prize, first established in 2019 with support from Treehouse Investments. Submissions open Friday, September 15, 2023.

“I want people to see that their voices matter, I want people to be able to express anything about their communities. [...] So I’m hoping that [my project] benefits them in terms of having their communities represented, having their voices represented, having a chance to be expressive, and feel safe about it, having a chance to take some ownership over what they’ve created, and to be proud of their communities.”
