The DO Lectures - You are not stuck.

Hi there,

People do the opposite in a tough economy to what they should do.

They play it safe.

They stick to a formula that they ALREADY know has stopped working.

They try and tweak a broken business model, and they end up losing.

And YET.

This is a time for creativity and brave ideas.

Because.

THIS IS A TIME FOR YOUR BEST IDEAS, NOT YOUR SAFEST.

This requires a different mindset.

One where you begin to admit that you are not stuck. Even if it sure feels like it right now.

A Big Re-Fink.

One idea can change everything.

One insight.

One single observation.

That idea that sits in the back of your head.

Each day, it reminds you.

Gnaws relentlessly away you.

‘Hey, I am here.’

‘Is NOW the right time?’

And each day, you find reasons for it not to be:

How come no one has ever done it?

I am too old?

I have too much to lose?

Having ideas is not the hardest part.

The level of resistance tells you how much you really want to do it.

Dreams are scary.

Because at some point, you must tell the world: This is mine.

You are not stuck.

You are not late for anything.

It’s time… to back you.

It’s time to be brave and do the scary thing called change.

1. Nintendo

• Then: Initially started in 1889 as a playing card company.

• Now: A global leader in video game development and production, responsible for iconic franchises like "Super Mario," "Zelda," and "Pokémon."

2. Wrigley

• Then: Began in 1891 selling soap and baking powder, offering chewing gum as a promotional gift.

• Now: Best known for its various brands of chewing gum, including Wrigley's Spearmint and Juicy Fruit.

3. 3M

• Then: Founded in 1902 as a mining company, aimed at mining corundum.

• Now: A diversified technology company known for producing items like Post-it Notes and Scotch Tape.

4. Toyota

• Then: Started as a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works in the 1920s, focusing on the creation of automatic fabric looms.

• Now: One of the world's largest automotive manufacturers, producing a wide range of vehicles.

5. Nokia

• Then: Established in 1865 as a pulp mill, later diversifying into rubber and cables.

• Now: Known primarily for its telecommunication equipment and mobile devices, although it has undergone several transformations and partnerships.

6. Sony

• Then: Began in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, focusing on repairing radios and creating telecommunications equipment.

• Now: A leading electronics and entertainment company, producing consumer electronics, video games, films, and music.

7. Samsung

• Then: Started in 1938 as a small trading company dealing in dried-fish, locally grown groceries, and noodles.

• Now: A colossal conglomerate producing a vast array of products and services, from consumer electronics to financial services.

8. Avon

• Then: Founded in 1886 as the California Perfume Company, selling perfume door-to-door.

• Now: A global beauty company selling cosmetics, perfume, and other beauty products, primarily through direct selling.

9. Slack Technologies

• Then: Originally developed as an internal communication tool for a gaming company named Tiny Speck while developing a game called "Glitch."

• Now: Known for its collaboration hub Slack, used by millions for professional communication and collaboration.

10. Twitter (Now X)

• Then: Started as Odeo in 2005, a network where people could find and subscribe to podcasts.

• Now: One of the world's leading social media platforms, allowing users to post and interact with messages known as "tweets."

There are no boring Problems.

Just boring answers.

And right now, no one can afford to do what no longer works.

Your ideas are NOW more valuable to your business than at any other point.

You CAN’T AFFORD to be busy.

You CAN’T AFFORD to be average.

It is a moment in time to have your best ideas.

No one likes change.

Even the list of companies above would have been happy to stay as they were if it had been going swimmingly well.

“It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.” Peter Drucker.

But when something stops working, we must change. Or we die.

We want CERTAINTY; we got UNCERTAINTY.

We wish it was easier.

We can wish the good times would come back.

We can wish for our luck to change.

But throughout history, what is certain is change.

And it will never stop.

So, we must make the most of it.

Wishing is not a strategy.

But thinking different is.

Ideas change everything.

They are the ultimate business insurance.

And the good thing is creativity is a skill.

And, therefore, can be learned.

I got lucky when I was 21, I got a great teacher.

I learned the power of BIG IDEAS from my old Boss at Saatchi’s – Graham Fink.

My office was opposite theirs. (He shared it with Jeremy -an amazing writer.)

I just watched them as they made one of the most famous TV ads of all time.

It put British Airways back on the map.

They were struggling to persuade people that they had changed because they had been so bad for so long.

It is still today their most memorable advertisement. EVER.

Clue: BIG IDEA.

A few years ago, I called Graham and asked him if he would consider doing an online course, and he said yes.
