Hi there,

Picture this: It’s a bright and early morning, and you’re all set with your meticulously crafted designs for a new project. The room’s buzzing with anticipation as you’re about to share your visual narrative with the team.

And suddenly…

Low-fidelity: “Uh, what are we looking at? Is it supposed to be missing photos?”
Mid-fidelity: “So, are we debating layout or color schemes now?”
High-fidelity: “Oh, are we nailing down the exact pixel width of that button?”

This was my experience in one of my first roles, running design sprints for a startup studio. A few weeks into one of our first projects, the team wasn’t on the same page. Although I knew how to use wireframes to visualize our ideas and high-fidelity mockups to finalize them, I hadn’t yet grasped the full value of presenting designs the right way.

I didn’t even know there was a right way! And oh, the lively mix of confusion that followed as two engineers, a marketer, an analyst, and a founder scrambled to get on the same page. If you work with others, I’m guessing you’ve been there too.

It took me years of trial, error, and wading through chaotic meetings to figure things out. But today? You can fast forward through all that in the time it takes to read this newsletter.

I caught up with Leon Barnard, one of our in-house UX experts and authors of Wireframing for Everyone, to pull the most important tips that’ll help you ensure your idea isn’t lost or misinterpreted.

Today, we're diving into the delicate dance of presenting wireframes (and, let’s be honest—other stages of design):

Creating a dialogue, not a monologue: Turning presentations into conversations.
Anticipating curiosities: Being one step ahead of your audience’s questions.
Expressing your design journey: Why sharing the process matters as much as the final product.

1. Creating a dialogue, not a monologue

Start by introducing the objectives and scope of the design. Give a brief overview of what the wireframes aim to achieve. Then, open up communication! Instead of merely displaying your wireframes, invite collaborative insights, fostering a more inclusive design environment.

In our experience, sharing reference materials like user personas, earlier discussions, or design briefs can provide additional context too. I do this every time I pitch a website page or onboarding screen idea.

Scenario: You have a low-fidelity wireframe ready and are about to present it. Instead of walking through it alone, you encourage questions and suggestions at every step of the presentation.

What’s In It For You: This collaborative approach enriches the design and builds a sense of collective ownership, which could lead to fewer revisions and a smoother design process.

Action Item: During your next wireframe presentation, pause after each significant point and invite feedback with questions like:

"Does this layout align with the user goals we discussed?"
"How do you think this design element will impact the user experience?"
"Is there anything you feel is missing or should be rethought at this stage?"

2. Anticipating curiosities

Being prepared isn't just about having your wireframes ready; it's also about anticipating your audience's questions and concerns and addressing them proactively. For example, your wireframes' different shapes, lines, and annotations have specific meanings. You can help your audience understand these by proactively building explanations into your presentation or anticipating questions.

Scenario: When presenting wireframes for your next project, you prepare a list of potential queries and have clear, concise answers ready.

What’s In It For You: Your preparedness displays a thorough grasp of the project, instilling confidence in your team or clients and ensuring a more productive discussion.

Action Item: Draft a list of potential questions and rehearse your responses. Some examples include:

"Why haven't we included color schemes at this stage?"
"How will this design ensure a good user flow?"
"What led to the choice of these design elements over others?"

3. Sharing your design journey

Sharing your design journey is about providing a narrative on how your wireframes evolved, illustrating the thoughtful process behind each design choice.

Analogies can help in bridging the understanding gap too. Comparing elements in your wireframe to familiar objects or functions can be helpful, like “This onboarding screen is opening the door to…”

Scenario: In a higher-fidelity presentation, you take a moment to share the progression from low to high fidelity, highlighting the feedback received and how it was integrated.

What’s In It For You: This narrative can enhance the appreciation of your design’s evolution, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and transparency.

Action Item: Share a brief narrative of your design evolution during your presentation. You can use phrases like:

"Incorporating the feedback received at the low-fidelity stage, we refined..."
"As we moved to our next iteration, the emphasis shifted to..."
"The transition to high-fidelity allowed us to fine-tune..."

Ideas get tossed around, shaped, and agreed upon in your wireframes. As you head into your next wireframe presentation, bear these nuggets in mind:

Am I fostering a dialogue, or am I on auto-pilot?
Have I anticipated the curious minds and packed some snappy comebacks?
Am I ready to narrate the evolution of our design odyssey vividly?
How clear is my design narrative? Am I ready to steer the conversation back if we meander?

Now, go ahead, share your design ideas, welcome feedback, and let every wireframe presentation be a step forward toward creating something amazing.
