Over the past 20 years, Barstool Sports has attracted a big audience of young men with its Bro culture edginess.

In 2017, along came The Water Coolest, a free daily newsletter with a similar edge but an entirely topic: money and investing.

It was created by Tyler Morin, who described himself as “a finance guy who knew nothing about media. I overcame it by making every mistake in the book,” he said.

By 2021, the two companies saw an opportunity to make a deal.

But in a twist, something unexpected happened in 2023...

The founder bought the newsletter back.

Whenever we publish reports, we are all about including the deals that will be most helpful for you.

At the same time, we also look to add a layer of gender representation. Personally, I want to see at least a few female founders included in each report.

For this newsletter deals report, that wasn't easy. There simply aren't that many women who have sold newsletters.

But we managed to write about Connie Loizos' sale of StrictlyVC, and Hayley Sperling and her co-founder Sam Hoisington's deal to sell Madison Minutes.

And as we went to press on this report, we heard about the sale of Betches Media, a media brand that includes a newsletter list of 1.8 million subscribers. Its three female co-founders sold for $24 million, plus another potential $30 million via an earn-out.

While that deal isn't in this report, we've added it to our queue to write about in the coming weeks.
