I get it. And I feel it. Our tools and our apps are a shadow of what they could be.

There’s a particular kind of software developer perfectionism, often resulting in chasing minimal 1%-improvements. “Optimize everything” is a mantra coders fall prey to too many times. We lose ourselves in the minute details of our apps, wasting days on ultimately low-impact tasks. Just a few days ago, I spent two hours writing a bash script to parse and convert 5 lines of timestamps. Would take me 10 seconds to do this, once a week. Yet, there I was, spending most of my morning automating it. Probably spending more time on the automation than it will ever save me.​

Fortunately, I am surrounded by Indie Hackers; founders who tell their fellow devs that as long as it works, it’s fine. Because software, unlike cars, buildings, or airplanes, can be bloated, wobbly, and unoptimized. It’s a tool, fluent over time, helping us solve problem that lie outside of optimizing runtime or just many Gigabytes our node_modules folder grows to.
