Today we’re listening to the Brad Mehldau Trio, an American jazz trio. We’ve recommended Mehldau himself several times before. He was born in 1970 and grew up in Florida and Connecticut, eventually moving to New York City to study jazz at the New School in the late ‘80s.¹ His trio, which features Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums, formed in the mid-90s. Where Do You Start, the trio’s 2012 LP, showcases their multi-dimensional virtuosity, with Mehldau’s “lyrical” playing center stage. The jazz group has a flair for rock covers – track 6 is an amazing “Hey Joe” cover. We’re also re-upping Mehldau’s solo record from earlier this year, Your Mother Should Know, a series of solo jazz reconfigurations of Beatles standards. The trio is currently on tour.
