Analytics for Product People

What is product analytics? Product analytics is the process of analyzing how users engage with your product. It involves collecting data, tracking user actions and product metrics, and uncovering insights that will inform your prioritization decisions. The folks at Aha! explain how analytics can help eliminate guesswork by giving you data-driven reference points to guide decision-making. (via Aha!)

The AI Pin

Just yesterday, it was reported by TechCrunch that Humane, a startup with roots in Apple, has recently unveiled a new product that merges AI with physical design: the AI Pin. This development highlights the evolving trend of integrating AI into tangible products. Here, we delve into the details of this device and its implications for the future of product design.

Led by Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, the company has assembled a team to bring this concept to life. The AI Pin itself is compact, equipped with a Snapdragon processor, 32GB storage, and various sensors, including a 12-megapixel camera. Its defining feature, however, is the touch panel and laser projection system, thoughtfully engineered for a broad user base.

The AI Pin primarily functions through voice commands, but its laser projection feature offers a unique user interface. It can display texts and messages on the user's hand, navigable through simple hand gestures. Humane has emphasized inclusivity in its design, ensuring the device is functional across different skin tones and body types.

With an initial production of 100,000 units and significant interest already shown, Humane is cautiously optimistic about the AI Pin's market entry, slated for early next year in the U.S. This release strategy reflects a measured approach to introducing a novel product category.

For those of us Product Managers and Product Leaders, the AI Pin represents an interesting development in how AI is being incorporated into even physical products. It's a notable example of the ongoing trend where technology is not just confined to software but is increasingly integrated into everyday objects. Might this be the new iPhone? Or is it the next Google Glass? Time will tell – but but it’s another example of how AI is making its way into the world we live in.

When you sunset a product, provide customers a place to go. Intuit announced that it is shutting down the budgeting app Mint and pushing customers to its other service, Credit Karma. The two apps share a similar collection of features, but when Mint officially goes away on January 1st, 2024 it’s not clear whether Credit Karma will get the budgeting features that Mint is known for. Intuit may have made this move to avoid maintaining products that did roughly the same thing. And if they choose not to add budgeting features to Credit Karma, that could be a sign of how widely those features were (or weren’t) used.

YouTube has everyone frantically deleting their ad blockers. Following YouTube’s global crackdown on ad blockers, users are uninstalling the programs or searching for ones that YouTube can’t identify. The company started restricting ad blockers earlier this year as a “small experiment.” It later confirmed to The Verge that it’s expanding the initiative, hoping to motivate users to watch ads or cough up $14 monthly for YouTube Premium. Guess this is a sign that people would rather watch an ad here and there rather than subscribing to watch funny cat videos.

Is your organization looking for “CS without the BS”? If so, check out a new customer support tool called Plain. The modern customer service tool integrates with tools like Slack and allows you to embed bug reports directly into your product. It also will integrate real customer data into specific support issues.

Is your team missing out on information shared in remote meetings? You should try Groupthink, the latest tool that uses AI to join a meeting, take notes and share a summary - even if you didn’t attend. Pretty soon, the only attendees in meetings will be a bunch of AI bots waiting for someone to say something. Makes you wonder if most meetings are really necessary…
