Today we’re listening to Thomas Köner, a German multimedia artist from Bochum. Köner picked up instruments at a young age, and fell into video editing after studying composition and piano at conservatory.¹ In the early ‘90s, inspired by observations of the sublime in nature, such as Norwegian glaciers, they released a series of drone compositions.² On Teimo from 1992, Köner used inventive recording techniques to capture tones in suspended animation, such as floating microphones to gongs underwater.³ On Permafrost from 1993, they play even sparser drone music, with tracks that remind you that music is ultimately just moving air.
