Need To Know

Fighting Reaches Gaza Hospitals

Two major hospitals in Gaza City lost power and stopped accepting new patients yesterday, as fighting between Israel Defense Forces and Hamas militants intensified near the buildings. Around 1,500 patients remain at al-Shifa hospital, according to the Health Ministry in Gaza, including dozens of newborns in neonatal intensive care (Israel has reportedly offered to evacuate the babies).

Multiple international organizations called for a humanitarian cease-fire near the buildings. Israel has accused Hamas of intentionally placing command centers under and near the hospitals and other humanitarian infrastructure.

Separately, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shed some light on the country's postwar plans Saturday, saying Gaza would be completely demilitarized when fighting eventually ends, with Israel entering at will to conduct security operations. He also rejected the idea the Palestinian Authority, which administers the nearby West Bank, could assume government oversight in Gaza.

Israeli officials have also said they do not want a long-term occupation of Gaza. It remains unclear who may ultimately oversee the territory of 2.3 million Palestinians aside from Israel, the Palestinian Authority, or Hamas.

Nord Stream Saboteur

A high-ranking Ukrainian military officer was responsible for the September 2022 Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, according to new media reports. Several nations have opened investigations into the attack, which reduced Europe's oil supply ahead of last winter (see previous write-up).

Roman Chervinsky, a 48-year-old colonel with ties to the intelligence community, reportedly coordinated the six-person operation, though sources claim senior generals initiated the plot. The team reportedly rented a sailboat and used deep-sea diving equipment to lay bombs on the steel and concrete pipelines in the Baltic Sea. Chervinsky is currently jailed in Ukraine, awaiting trial for alleged abuse of power in a separate case. He denied involvement in the pipeline sabotage and claimed the allegations are Kyiv's retribution for his past criticism of the administration.

Sources also claim Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has consistently denied Ukraine's involvement, was intentionally kept out of the loop of the mission. See updates on the war here.

Snow Blankets Anchorage

Officials in Anchorage, Alaska, declared a snow emergency, while thousands of households entered the weekend without power after a winter storm broke records on back-to-back days last week. Snowfall totals in some areas in southcentral Alaska surpassed 2 feet in the course of 48 hours.

At least four homeless residents died while outdoors over the past week, bringing the city's total to 49 this year. The figure is more than double that of last year, with officials saying the deaths highlight the ongoing housing challenges in the city. Anchorage has an estimated 3,150 homeless residents—about four times its shelter capacity after officials ended the use of a downtown sports arena to host beds. Mayor Dave Bronson made headlines over the summer after a proposal to provide one-way airfare to more temperate locations.

Forecasters expect another 6 to 8 inches of snow today. See photos from last week's storm here
