Product Collective - 🔄 Build, measure, learn... repeat

Iterating Products

7 Steps to designing a data-informed product loop. Product, at its core, is an overlap of dozens of disciplines including product management, DevOps, analytics, engineering, and consumer psychology. The teams responsible for these disciplines rely on a sound strategy and accurate data to build and ship usable products to customers. Too often, they jump from their high-level strategy and goals straight to designing their product features. They don’t have a workable method for leveraging data along the way to make informed product decisions, and they don’t test the impact to see if their strategy is working. John Cutler offers a solution: a data-informed product loop. (via Amplitude

How to use the build, measure, learn loop in the product development process. The build-measure-learn process is a fundamental part of the lean startup methodology introduced by Eric Ries in his book “The Lean Startup.” Over time, companies across different industries have used it as a valuable tool for building successful products. Team Userpilot explains how to apply this framework at every stage of your product development cycle and drive product growth. (via Userpilot

Thank you

So, I was all set to dive into this week's OpenAI saga (and seriously – it’s almost crazier than a season of Billions), but then I realized something. It's Thanksgiving – and maybe it’s better to hit pause on the tech drama and talk about something a bit more important – being thankful.

Thanksgiving is this unique time when we step away from our screens (well, kinda) and think about what really matters. Sure, we all love a good product launch and solving complex problems, but this week, let's also remember to appreciate the simpler things. Like, how amazing is it that we get to work in such a dynamic field with people who are as passionate about their work as they are about supporting each other?

And this is also a time when we can recognize what’s important to us here at Product Collective – you! Seriously… thank you. We wouldn’t be doing what we’re doing without all of you… whether it’s joining us for our INDUSTRY Interview video chats, being active on the Member Hub, or joining us for our in-person conferences. To say that we’re thankful for you would be the biggest understatement ever. But I’ll say it again. Thank you!

I’m thankful for every question asked, every insight shared, and every "Aha!" moment we’ve had together. This community isn’t just about managing products; it’s about building relationships, learning from each other, and finding that little bit of inspiration that we didn’t even know was going to hit us when it did.

So, while I'll get back to dissecting the tech world's ups and downs next week, let's use this week to count our blessings. Whether you're spending Thanksgiving with family, and friends, or a good ol' Netflix binge, take a moment to appreciate the journey we're on together.

Here's to a community that's more than just a group of professionals – you're a bunch of awesome humans making the product world a better place.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! 🍁

Why read the document when you can ask AI? Notion recently introduced Q&A, a new feature that allows you to get answers about any document in your workspace through conversational interface. So the next time your stakeholders have questions about your product, they can ask questions about your product brief or roadmap. They may even get a correct answer.

Want to understand a process, but don’t like reading process diagrams? Celonis, a SaaS company that focuses on process map diagramming, released new capabilities to make processes more understandable. The new feature analyzes process flows and creates an intelligence graph that you can query through a chat interface. So, now if someone from a different department wants to understand how your process works, they can query Celonis instead of trying to decipher your process diagram.

A backlog is more than a list of stories. A story map provides a simple way to see how user stories relate to each other in terms of order of activity and priority. If you’re looking for a way to create and share story maps virtually, StoryMap.site is the website for you. You can create the map with simple text input and use emojis to communicate various things, like key steps, frustration points for the user, or even tag releases or priority.

You put instant messaging in my email app. Gmail is running a new experiment trying to turn the email app into an instant messaging app. When looking at an email message you may see a quick reply bar that looks just like instant messaging input. The experiment offers a one-line input bar at the bottom for replies that will send a message with your brief reply. So far, the experiment has seen a very limited release, but you may be instant messaging from Gmail soon.

How to use the product discovery loop to find product-market fit. Some time ago, Holly Hester-Reilly spoke at the Lean Startup Summit in Berlin about how to use the product discovery loop to build high-growth products, from finding your first product-market fit to iterations and strategy development later in a product’s life. Holly lays out those ideas by describing product-market fit and breaking down the process of attaining it. (via Holly Hester-Reilly

Too many iterations are a huge problem. The concept of “The Sunk Cost of Iterations” is deeply rooted in today’s product development sphere, where iterative processes are not just encouraged but often deemed essential. With rising market competition and evolving consumer demands, iterating has become a go-to strategy. But how many iterations are too many? And at what point does the cost of repeating outweigh the benefits? The Weave Media team dives deep into these concerns, aiming to provide clarity, drawing from both data-driven insights and real-world examples.
