Flow State - McCoy Tyner
Flow State is the weekday newsletter providing great music to work to (no vocals). We pick one artist each day, tell you a little about them, and recommend a couple of their albums – including streaming links. Today we’re listening to McCoy Tyner, an American jazz pianist and composer from Philadelphia. He started playing piano at age 13, and in high school played professionally across Philly.¹ In 1960, he played on John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things, and then became a key member of Coltrane’s genre-redefining quartet. McCoy put out a slew of records as bandleader on Blue Note, including the two we’re playing today. Extensions from 1973 is a spiritual journey across four tracks that feature Alice Coltrane on harp and Wayne Shorter on sax. It’s a remarkable album that is strangely underplayed given the ensemble. The Real McCoy from 1967 is a lively demonstration of Tyner’s talent, featuring Joe Henderson on sax. Both records have Elvin Jones playing drums and Ron Carter on bass. Extensions - McCoy Tyner (40m, no vocals) The Real McCoy - McCoy Tyner (40m, no vocals) Have a really good Thursday. 1 |
