One bright spot for me is all the trend reports. My favorites have been the Pinterest Trends and TikTok’s What’s Next reports. Both hone in on how micro trends are now a core part of consuming content online — I find it all very interesting.

Another thing I’m enjoying is all the niche data from the different apps I spend my screen time on. My Duolingo report made me feel especially proud (I’m learning Korean and have kept up a 50-day long streak). Niche data for the win!

Despite seeing massive success on LinkedIn, Gaetano never really cracked the code on X — until this year, when a post went viral.

Here’s the anatomy of his viral tweet:

1. Unique knowledge explained in an interesting format with a contrarian twist.
2. A personal experience that’s commonly problematic but rarely discussed.
3. A “back-and-forth” scenario exchange in a conversational format.
4. An extremely compelling hook — every B2B marketer wants to learn how to answer difficult questions from the company CEO.
5. No sensationalism or clickbait. The answer was straightforward yet unexpected and refreshing. People love learning about new ways of solving old problems.

Next, he broke down what makes X posts go viral on the Buffer blog. Here are some of his top tips.

• Study X’s algorithm, which ultimately means study who X thinks your target audience is — and both things can help your content rank better and hit virality. If you want a good sense of your target audience, scroll through your ‘For You’ feed.
• Create engaging content, for which Gaetano recommends a three-part formula. First, start with a hook, then make the structure easy to follow, and then mix up the type of content with long posts, short ones, images, and videos.
• Showcase your personality in your content to add a unique personal touch. When sharing your personal stories, be authentic. Your goal should not be engagement; it should be relatability.
• Use external links and call-to-actions sparingly. Not every thread has to end with a link or CTA. Sometimes, the story or the information provided is enough to engage your audience and leave a lasting impression.

Remember, there is no guaranteed way to go viral. You can post something brilliant, and it will flop. Or, you could post something entirely off the cuff, which might go viral for the wrong reasons.
