Eintracht Frankfurt v Mainz 05A win against RB Leipzig on the 13th of January set the stage for Eintracht Frankfurt’s assault on the Champions League places, but those lofty ambitions have come to a halt again following the latest 2:2 draw against lowly SV Darmstadt. Die Adler stormed to a 2:0 lead with scintillating attacking football, but careless individual errors and a lack of discipline allowed Darmstadt to equalize in the final minutes of the fixture. Frankfurt have now drawn against all 3 sides currently level on the bottom of the table, and they are in danger of staging a repeat when Mainz 05 comes to town on Saturday. Die 05er had the weekend off after icy conditions caused a safety hazard in the MEWA-ARENA. With 13 days between their last fixture they will be well rested, but whether the pressure has eased off during that timeframe is a different question. Mainz look like a competitive topflight outfit again since the appointment of Jan Siewert, but the fact remains that they have managed only one win since his appointment in early November. Die 05er will need to begin turning draws into victories again if they stand a chance of escaping the drop in May.
