My Tips for Remote Product Management

In the past month, we've seen an unprecedented shift to remote work. On April 14, I'm joining the productboard team to share my tips for product teams who are learning how to quickly adjust to working remotely. We'll cover:

  • Best practices and tools product teams need to build excellent products remotely
  • How remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic differs from "normal" remote work
  • How teams can adapt to remote work under current constraints and pressure

CEOs and Leaders: Here's How to Prepare for an Extended Period of Remote Work

David Hassell built 15Five as a remote-first company since day one 9 years ago; the company now has more than 200 employees. He believes running a company with a remote-first mindset and infrastructure is beneficial to productivity and resilience, even if most of your team typically works out of a physical office. Having built a handful of startups with distributed teams myself, I wholeheartedly agree. David shares his thoughts on how you can use this time to reshape your company for the better during what is likely to be an extended period of remote work.

Signaling as a Service

Julian Lehr, Stripe's Startup Partnerships Lead, said that one of the best books he's read in the last few years is The Elephant in the Brain. The book makes two main points: (1) the majority of our everyday actions can be traced back to some form of signaling or status seeking and (2) our brains deliberately try to hide this fact from us and others. Julian breaks down each point, and explains why and how this impacts what people are willing to pay for software, which often has inherent signaling limitations.

What Motivates People to Develop Good Habits?

Many of us forgo decisions that contribute to our long-term goals in favor of instant gratification. Why is that? I enjoyed this read on how habit forming actually works, and what really motivates people to develop good habits. How can you improve your product based on what truly motivates your customers?

AMA With Disney's Former Director of Marketing Automation

Disney's former Director of Marketing Automation Haseeb Tariq recently hosted an interesting AMA. I enjoyed reading about the most important lessons he's learned working for both B2B and B2C companies. These two stuck out to me, and I echo their importance: Always put your customers first and prioritize retention because it ultimately determines the success of your business. Read the full AMA here.

Grubhub's Link Building Strategy

I found this peek into Grubhub's link building strategy fascinating, particularly given the quick rise in popularity (and necessity) of food delivery services this past month. Back in 2007, Grubhub focused on organizing its site structure and capitalizing on back links. Thirteen years later, that early effort continues to pay off. This is the power of good SEO

Marketing and Growth Lessons for Uncertain Times

One thing we know for sure is that the world is changing—and your marketing and growth strategy should, too. This article features the findings of two studies that looked at the performance of companies before, during, and after former recessions. One interesting finding: Successful leaders practiced greater discipline during boom times, spending significantly less than their peers. This, in turn, offered them more flexibility during lean years, allowing them to trade short-term profitability for long-term gains. Here are some other learnings to help you navigate and grow your business during a crisis

The Real Reason Why Morning Brew Grew to 1.5M Subscribers in 5 Years

Morning Brew has become one of my favorite newsletters in the past year—and I'm not alone. More than 1.5 million people have subscribed in the last five years. This is an interesting look into how they did it, along with UX and copywriting tips to improve your own newsletter if you have one. And if you don't, there's never been a better time to start.

Getting the Bigger Role at Work

It's natural to want to see forward movement in your career, which usually equates to landing a "bigger role," however you define that based on your career goals. If you want that "bigger role," one of the best things you can do is find ways to start doing the role before it's formally given to you. Here are some creative ways you can do that, especially during this time of major transition for most companies.

How a Growth Mindset Can Lead to Success

We've all heard countless commencement speeches, conference talks, and YouTube videos with successful people promoting the importance of "finding your passion." But what does that even mean, and how can people begin the process of finding what they are passionate about? Here's how a growth mindset can change the way you think about finding your passion—and how an initially small seed of interest can grow into something that energizes you for the rest of your career.

 Tip of the Week
Marketing During the COVID-19 Crisis

On this week's episode of The Startup Chat, Steli and I talk about marketing during the Coronavirus crisis. We discuss how some companies are reacting, what kinds of marketing are working at the moment, and how you can use this as an opportunity to build a closer relationship with your customers. It's an uncertain time, but there is a lot of positive transformation that can come from this—including how you think about your connection to current and future customers.
