❓COMMUNITY QUESTION
I have a number of years of experience in the social impact space but have primarily been in communications, and I want to move into UX research and program management. So far I haven't had any success making a lateral move. Do I have to go to graduate school to make this transition?
❤️CAREER COACH REFLECTION Seems like you have really a clear why and motivation and now transitioning from a comms role to UX research and PM ✨
2 Job Search Strategies for a Successful Career Transition
Can also be interesting to already know some unconventional & high impact job search strategies you can use in this career transition – that if you feel confident to try them can also help you just focus on job search now or during your educational journey you decide to embark:
1) Connect with people who has made a similar transition to discover how to enter on the field
I would consider connecting with people who are doing the UX research & management/PM work you aspire to do. This can help you get valuable information on how you can bring your story together and give you more clarity on how to enter the field whilst deciding if and which educational programs can be of more relevance for you now or in the future!
PS: Consider getting specific on your searches of people in LinkedIn who for example combine a similar background than you in comms and work in UX so when you reach out to them you can link to that and then they can also be the most relevant people to help you get more a clear picture on how to enter the field, how to use your background etc.
Here is an inspiration message you can send in LinkedIn:
[NAME], your professional journey really stood out to me. I’m very interested in building my career in [role] also coming from a communications background in social impact.Since you’ve been in that transition, would you have some time to offer me a bit of advice on pursuing this? I would really appreciate a brief call at your convenience.
2) Test your path & target opportunities with mini volunteering projects
This one is the one that can help you most in gaining experience in this career transition into UX/PM & focus your efforts in your job search and target better jobs.
Following the connecting strategy, one of the questions you can ask is what is one challenge their team is experiencing or try to discover one of their key strategic priorities – you can also try to find this via research in their UX design and experience (so sometimes no need to do an informational interview for this as well.)
This is a more advanced strategy to build experience in UX/PM and focus your efforts in a job search showing your skills. All by targeting better jobs by testing your path forward and target opportunities with various mini volunteering projects.

Here's a few Asks & Offers in the community this week: 🌱Sanne: Are you a social impact freelancer or creative working on social impact issues? Are you craving community, connection and inspiration? You can now sign up for the Social Impact Squad’s remote coworking spring cycle!I'm sharing this initiative I started which might be of interest to the social impact creatives and freelancers here. All spots in the last cycle were filled up and everyone was very positive about the quality of the connections and support gained. I've tried to make it as valuable as a community so that everyone gets to work on their specific needs while finding community ( because let's be real, working independently to change social impact issues can get pretty lonely😅). Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions 💕
🌱Kathryn: Hi all! I have an offer that's a bit specific-- but if there are any freelance editors in this group, read on! I've been doing academic editing on the side for 4-5 years but lately have had less capacity for small projects that come my way. I mainly work with PhD students in Europe publishing in medical and humanities research. I'd love to have another person or pool of people I can refer out to when something comes my way that I can't take on. If you have experience and are interested, please let me know! 📝❣️
