Flow State - MIZU
Flow State recommends instrumental music every weekday, highlighting an artist who inspires music appreciation in this age of algorithms. If you enjoy Flow State, consider becoming a paid member – that unlocks our weekly Tuesday mixes and private Spotify playlists. Good morning. Today we’re listening to MIZU, a cellist and electronic producer based in New York City. She trained classically at Juilliard and has collaborated with Flow State favorites Rachika Nayar and Tim Hecker among others.¹ In her original pieces, she explores the full sonic range of the cello, using all the octaves its strings reach, targeting harmonics, and treating bow and body as a percussive pairing. To these manifold sounds she applies loops and effects and “synth ornamentation,”² simulating an avant-garde orchestra. She just released a new record, Forest Scenes, a cinematic and atmosphere collection of processed cello. But first we’re playing her 2023 debut LP, Distant Intervals, which evokes a sublime sense of wonder. Distant Intervals - MIZU (40m, no vocals except chorus in the final two minutes) Forest Scenes - MIZU (40m, some vocal snippets) We wish you a great start to your week. 1 The artist’s website |
