What is your “official” professional role and field?
I’m the Founder and Director of The SMC Group, a boutique Monitoring & Evaluation and DEI consultancy for our sector. I provide bespoke technical support and workshops to build expertise. I specialise in participatory, decolonial, intersectional, and inclusive approaches to our work. The SMC Group is a proudly anti-racist, queer, and feminist-led company.
What is your unofficial role and field?
My work challenges power by mainstreaming RADIQUAL© approaches to social impact; (RADIQUAL© is a manifesto and framework for innovative research I designed back when I started the company).
I support organisations better understand what M&E is and how to do it in ways that best reflect their communities, sociopolitical context, and that showcase their localised expertise. Each project and client is varied since I design everything specifically for them, which keeps me constantly learning and always creative, which I love. For example, so far this year I did the technical M&E for a project, worked on a strategy evaluation, and facilitated an organisation-wide session on decolonising knowledge.
I then branched out into doing DEI for this sector too, through consultancies, workshops, and talks. I noticed that I was helping to build intersectional feminist spaces within the M&E teams, but the organisation didn’t reflect those values. That work led me to We Create Space and I’m proud to be part of their Global Advisory Board and Speaker Collective as well!
Besides that, as a human person I am a big sci-fi fan (waiting to see Dune 2 next week!). I’m being modest when I say I’m a great cook, and I’ve just figured out how to grow things properly on my little balcony garden at home. I’ve got approximately twenty gajillion creative hobbies which give me the peace, clarity, and boundaries I need in work that is so deeply personal and always political.
How did you get to where you are today in your career?
The long way!
I’ve wanted to work in this sector since I was a teenager, and I started out as an activist. I led the world’s largest school community in the Make Poverty History campaign of 2005 - horribly patronising and whitewashing yes, but I learned so much! The work of great journalists inspired me to get involved in important campaigns and I wanted to do that for someone else. So I started a newsletter in high school, then freelanced in university while also waiting tables and working in a B&B to save up. I then worked as an economic journalist in a news wire, and when it closed down I was unemployed for about a year.
I started my first company then, an ethical fashion business called Syra Brownlock. I designed the clothes, patterns, sourced the fabrics, and made everything in a circular economy model that supported women’s cooperatives in India. I closed it during the pandemic sadly, and now I sew just for myself and family.
A chance encounter at an airport helping a stranger with her luggage inspired me to apply for jobs in philanthropy instead of the low-paying roles in Central European NGOs. I worked at Open Society Foundations as a grantmaker and M&E specialist for 5 years. To be diplomatic, it was a toxic environment and I realised philanthropy was not what it wanted to be, so we parted ways and I started The SMC Group in 2018.
Your relationship to “social impact”: has it evolved since you began your career?
Absolutely. I’m still quite idealistic but our sector’s corruption and toxicity really took a lot of that away. I now look at it as circles of influence and control - ‘what can I do within my space to make things better for people I hold power over, and how can I do my part’, rather than ‘how can I change the world’ and all its inherent saviourness!
