Name ideas.

Ever Googled what to name your horse? No? Me neither.

But apparently lots of people do.

The second screenshot is for the site Horse Name Ideas.

26,000+ people visit that site every month (and growing). Now that’s a nice little micro niche site! It probably doesn’t earn much, but even a few hundred dollars a month for lists of horse names isn’t a bad gig.

The first screenshot is for All Team Names.

Who knew you could get ~150,000 visitors/mo to a site about “team name ideas”!?

Well, apparently you can. You can probably get quite a bit more, even. The site has just 66 articles, ranking for keywords like:

Imagine how many more “team”-related keywords are out there! Definitely far more than 66.

A quick search in Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer shows nearly 20,000 keywords with the term “team names”, amounting to a total monthly search volume of 519K!

And that’s just “team names”.

What about “horse names”?

Here ya go:

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

If this inspires you to start a site in the name ideas niche, you should come up with a different topic.

Maybe “cat names” (which, by the way, has a total volume of 695K/mo - higher than “team names”).

Or even “dragon names”:

How I would build a “name idea” site:

My suggestion would be to study other successful name idea sites to reverse engineer what works.

If I were to build a “name idea” niche site, I’d use AI to help come up with good name ideas.

And on every name idea page, I’d include a “name idea generator” at the top of the page. For example, a page about “black cat name ideas” would have a generator at the top that would spit out a few random ideas from the list.

Each generator would be specific to the page. So the “black cat name idea” generator would only pull from my list of black cat name ideas, not my list of orange cat name ideas.

I’d also have an overall generator and link to it in the header. It would pull from the entire list of name ideas on the site and provide maybe 10 random names at a time every time the user clicks “Generate”.

You can easily create these generators with ChatGPT or another AI program that codes. No need for coding knowledge. 😁 

How to monetize a “name idea” site

The obvious way is to have ads.

But I’d go a step further.

Create a print-on-demand shop where you sell t-shirts and hats with names on them, and link to it in your site’s menu.

For a cat name idea site, you might have t-shirts that say stuff like:

“Ask me about my cat, fluffpuff”.

Or “Fluffpuff: the best cat in the world”.

You’d probably want to offer custom orders, so you don’t have to list thousands of products for every different name. People could just pick the template they like and then specify their cat’s name in the order.

Word of caution

I honestly don’t know why the two sites I shared above survived all recent Google updates.

Plenty of others did not.

Just because a few survived, doesn’t mean yours will too. It’s very possible those sites I shared will still get hit. The update isn’t over yet - anything can happen still.

Also, many niche sites that mass published articles targeting easy, high volume keywords (such as name ideas) were destroyed by the HCU and March Core updates.

Building “name idea” sites is risky in the current climate (if you rely on Google for traffic). Honestly, building any website is risky. Tons of large brands and legit businesses with employees were brutally hit.

Make sure you understand these risks and are willing to accept them if you do end up building a name idea site, or any site for that matter.

And, consider diversifying your traffic sources. In my last email, I shared several fantastic traffic sources besides Google.

How I find interesting/easy niches like this

The quickest way to find endless great niche ideas (many of which are largely untapped by other SEOs) is by using Site Stats Database.

They’re easy to find by adding a few filters. I like to filter the list by a maximum DA (Domain Authority) of 10 or 15, or whatever you consider low. Then, sort the list by highest traffic. Or, by youngest site.

That’s how I quickly found All Team Names:

You can do the reverse too. Filter by at least 100,000 visitors/mo, and sort by lowest DA.

And, ignoring DA, you can find tons more interesting niches that don’t necessarily have low DA sites (but are still shockingly easy or untapped).

It’s such a powerful tool for niche discovery.

Every time I look through the database, I find a few more fascinating niches.
